DIY Corona Discharge Ozone Generator
    #14886126 - 08/07/11 03:32 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Since moving into our new house in April I've been plagued with cleaning my basement.  The prior residents were complete shit-piles and had 3-4 dogs that literally pissed all over hardwood floors(and tore up the finish with their claws.  It's a two story home with three bedrooms and was built in the 1950's.  The basement has one leaky cutoff valve by the water main, and although it's a slow leak, it's a source of moisture(luckily drains into the sump which is right next to it).

I have no idea how long the house sat without a dehumidifier running in the basement but I lost count of the hours I spent down there scrubbing from floor to ceiling.  HEPA filters are nice but they only filter stuff that's already airborne, while ozone can oxidize/destroy whatever it can reach.  Earlier this week I obtained a 7500 volt transformer that's simply a neon sign without the tubes.  Prior to creating my own ozone generator, with such a high output, I wanted to test out a few different layouts for creating (what I call) the corona discharge plate.

It's really easy to do this since there are so many teks on the web about it, but reading and doing can be entirely different.  Luckily my brother had a C.A.P. OZN-Jr laying around that no longer worked.  When I googled them for technical information I found a lot of reviews that expressed how big of a POS this unit is since it has a short lifespan and you can't replace the CD plate.  Upon taking the unit apart I immediately was shocked at how warped/corroded all of the components were.  The design is really shitty and ozone isn't effectively pushed out of the plastic case so shit was oxidized everywhere.  CAP used corona discharge as well, but I think they used stainless steel since there was green residue all over the ceramic plate.  To limit the ozone production the unit would run 20 min and stay off for 40.  He used it for the last house he rented so he could smoke weed in a room and kill the smell.

The first thing I did was completely dismantle the unit.  The wires to the fan were oxidized completely off the PCB board inside the fan, the wires to the discharge plate generated so much heat(probably from the fan not working and no one realizing it since it was 25mm) they melted through the plastic shroud that supported them, all the screws were rusted, the fuse needed replaced, and the chip that controlled the timer function was also destroyed.  So I cleaned up the rust on the screws, installed a power button I had laying around, soldered an old 80mm CoolerMaster PC case fan, and built a new CD discharge plate.  Again, the whole point of fixing this tiny unit was to see if it actually worked and play with designs to create the CD plate.

This is my first try, and I started working on it last night.  I have a bunch of glass slides for microscopy  so I used one of those since this is a very small unit.  From what I read the easiest metals to use for the electrodes are stainless steel or aluminum, and I didn't want to fuck around with stainless for prototypes.  The general idea is simple, between each electrode is a dielectric material.  So the important things are having the electrodes close to the glass, but not close enough so arcing occurs.  With that information I cut rectangular pieces of aluminum screen to fit in the center of the slide and leave a bit of space around the edges.  The wires from the transformer were soldered to the screen and the screen was adhered to the glass slide using RTV silicone.  Both screens came very close to perfectly lining up with each other(electrical tape was used to hold them close to the glass and in place while the silicone dried).

With that finished I rigged up a simple stand using rubber pieces that are used to hold some PC case fans in place without vibrating, and then I slid nylon bushings over those.  The bushings were a nice snug fit so it worked out well.  Then I just zip tied everything together for the sake of simplicity and quick breakdown.  The benefit of this unit is that if arcing occurs the fuse should pop and kill the power.  *One last thing I did was put a very light coat of dielectric grease on some parts of the board where corrosion was beginning to occur and I wanted to seal it off.  This thing will be nice for deodorizing cars and other things I'm sure.*

It was shocking how much ozone this generated right off the bat.  Definitely something to run on a timer and carefully monitor the strength of the ozone smell.  The plate works nicely and I thought I'd only get a line or two of glow because of the low voltage of the unit (not sure exactly what it is since most shit isn't labeled/readable and what was on the board).

This is the generator running in my basement.  The pics were taken in the dark and edited to compensate for the darkness.  For some reason my phone sees the corona as blue when I see it as purple.

When I get to the 7.5 kV ozone bomb I'll probably make a new thread with step by step pics.

That's pretty cool, but what is the purpose of flooding the basement with ozone? Is it a deodorizer?

In really high doses, those that would be incredibly irritating/dangerous to people, do actually kill almost all organic contaminants.  Small generators like the one in this post only use tiny amounts of electricity.  The small ones are great deodorizers.  I put the little one in my truck for a day, when it was very dry in the cab, it essentially bombed such a small space.  Nothing like that has every been done on my truck so it was cool to see how amazing ozone is for deodorizing.  Using it after a good scrubbing on upholstery would kill all odors.

Aside from my truck, the thing has been running in the basement only doing 20 min on and 40 min off on its own.  Prior to hooking it up I spent hours vacuuming everything off all the walls and then scrubbing with bleach.  It's looking so much better and smells great.

Yes, ozone, quite wonderful stuff.

I have deodorized my car of the smell of weed on countless occasions with Ozium :smile2:
