My trusty coffee grinder.....
    #14882674 - 08/07/11 05:16 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

.... Is no longer trusty. Got really hot and motor went out in the middle of making some BRF.

More of a rant than anything :frown:

That blows, do you have a blender around?

That's what I used for mine since my magic bullet broke a while back.

No blender handy, but at $15 for a multi useful kitchen appliance (cheap walmart price) as opposed to a $10 coffee grinder, a blender might not be a bad investment.  Thanks for the idea.

It takes a while and you have to give it a shake every once in a while but put that bad boy on its highest setting and shake every 1-2 mins after 10 mins you'll have a nice consistency.

If I wasn't so lazy I would still grind my own BRF as opposed to buying it. I like it a little more coarse than store bought. Everything seems to colonize faster and happier. But at $2 a pound at Meijer I can't pass up the convenience.

I agree with the faster/happier colonization from store bought flour.

Also, I am teaching the fiance the fun of this hobby and was making it more of a family activity. Was fun grinding rice w/ the misses until it burnt out.

On a side note, I went to walmart for a replacement just now, and misses and the baby got ran over by punk kids on handi capped scooters.

After chasing them to the front of the store yelling every curse word in the book, challenging the whole group to a rendezvous outside, I figured it was time to come home and smoke some herb and calm down. lolol.  So will try wal-mart again tomorrow!

I actually have done that in my first attempts a few years ago. Depending on the amount of flour, that's a lot of elbow grease! ahaha. No pain, no gain I suppose

How 'bout skipping the rice all together and start working with rye grain, wild bird seed, or corn? You and the misses will surely love preparing the grain together just as you did grinding the rice.

One reason and only one reason for not doing grain. I need to pay rent first, then buy a pressure cooker.

I just moved out of state and my 23qt presto did not make it :frown:  So this will get her/us started, in a week or two I'll be able to afford a PC and then it will be grain time.

Of course we could have just waited a week or two to start, but damn we were bored~~ lmao.

--edit-- ps. just noticed you are from TX.  Just moved from TX to MN. Talk about climate shock. Missing TX from day one :frown:

I "lucked out" in many ways... Found an AA PC a few years back for cheap; for actual canning... We grind our own wheat for homemade bread, pancakes from scratch, etc...  Most of the expensive stuff to get one started, I already had.  Which is good, because I'm between jobs and broke, :frown: Still need a roaster for pasturizing; vac/blower for chopping straw; all things agar; a laminar flowhood; finish building my mini greenhouse; etc, etc...

Hobbies are damn expensive, lol.

I bet those are some damn good pancakes.

I have seen on here someone using a steamer hooked to a cooler or some other type chamber for pasturizing in bulk.  This is something that really intrigued me, and will probably be the next thing I invest in, if I ever do.
