What does sp stand for ??
    #14882009 - 08/06/11 05:32 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I have been doing a lot of research to prepare myself for my first hunt this week and I have come across a few different strains with sp in the name. I have done some searching about what it means and the best answer I could come up with is Sleep paralysis, what does the sp in gymnophilus sp stand for?

So when the sections listing mushrooms in my area states that panaeolus cinctulus and panaeolus sp. are found it means the the cinculus variety as well as panaeolus in general are found here? If so why list both?

I'm guessing it means you find Pan. cincts are fairly common in your area, and also there are other Panaelous species to be found which are possibly less common/not confirmed in your area.

I think in that list, it usually means that some active mushroom within that genus has been found that was never nailed down to a specific species.  At least, that's what I took it to mean when I first started looking at that list.

I understand your frustration.  When I first looked at that list, I spent a lot of timing trying to figure out what Gymnopolus sp. was referring to.
