BackTrack 5 boot problem

I know there are better places to post this problem but I figured at least ONE shroomerite must've tried it. I've recently downloaded BackTrack 5 both the GNOME and KDE 64-bit versions. After all, my version of Windows 7 is 64-bit. Anyways, I installed both boot CD's (one at a time of course) on a USB so I could boot up the LiveCD. I use UNetbootin.
Anyways, I boot in just fine but when the console shows up, the screen scrambles then goes blank...as in OFF. The backlight isn't even on. I press ENTER, I type startx then ENTER, I press ESC, I type root (for login username) and then toor (login password) and ENTER in the hopes that it might inadvertently log me in. But to no avail.
This is the problem with both LiveCD's (GNOME and KDE versions). I'm going to download the 32-bit versions of both LiveCD's but I don't think they'll work.
Laptop Specs: Model: Dell XPS L501X CPU: Intel Core i5 @ 2.53GHz RAM: 4.00GB GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M, Intel HD Graphics Network Adapter: Intel WiFi Link 1000 BGN
I'm gonna take a guess and say that the video card may be the problem. I tried to somehow disable it in the BIOS but there doesn't seem to be any options pertaining to the use of the graphics card. If anything, the LiveCD should've used the Intel HD Graphics by default since it probably doesn't have the drivers necessary to use the NVIDIA card. Keep in mind that after the console shows up and just before it allows you to enter a command, that is when the screen scrambles then blanks out. Therefore, I have NO CONTROL over the boot process. I'm basically stuck. I've also tried booting into safe-mode but the following error keeps showing: /init: line 3: Can't open /dev/sr0: No medium found. I tried booting into "Text Only" mode and the boot process freezes on the BackTrack 5 splash screen. Any help is greatly appreciated as I'm sure I'm not the only one to face this problem. Thanks...

Damn that operating system is a piece of junk You'd probably be better off installing your own OS and then adding pen-testing tools.
/dev/sr0 refers to the CD drive. Enter the bios set the USB as primary boot device and disable your CD drives. Does it still complain? I'd say this is happening because it's expecting to boot off a cd, not off a USB stick. You could also try booting from a CD and see if it still has this error.
Your main problem sounds like a driver conflict. When you boot it should give you a list of menu options, press [TAB] on one of those options and you'll see something like:
Quote:
/casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/custom.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.gz text splash vga=791--
Just alter it to look like this:
Quote:
/casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/custom.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.gz text xforcevesa nomodeset
If all goes well it should now boot into text mode without any conflicts. If it still gets garbled at this point I can help you no further.

Can you just dd the image onto the jump drive? I've seen some weird issues with unetbootin in the past.. I try to avoid it if at all possible.

I use unetbootin for linux, but I've never seen this problem.
Backtrack hates soundcards! Backtrack frowns upon ALSA! Backtrack wants you to use command line!
Grr, evil, evil command line.

I've had similar problems on a 64bit i7, trying both Ubuntu and backtrack not 5 tho. But I agree you could easily try a different OS and install the same pen testing tools. Or just buy a real cheap laptop that has a great wireless card and what not for penetrating. My hp g60 has yet to let me down, paid 75$ for it.
