Broken xbox 360

It's one of the older ones with a 90 nm chip setup. I got the RROD's awhile ago and since the warranty expired I decided to try fixing it myself. I did the x-clamp fix thing which worked for 3 or 4 days before it RROD'ed again. Tightened the screws and it work again for another day. The next time it RROD'ed I figured that it must be a solder issue caused by over-tightening the heatsinks. I followed an internet tutorial which involved using a heat gun on the areas around the GPU and CPU while protecting the capacitors with poster putty, sealing off the board with thick plastic, and using aluminum foil over the plastic to defer heat. After that I plugged everything in and it RRODs almost instantly now.
When I turn it on the xbox RROD's almost instantly and the fans only turn on for a split second before going off. The power supply goes green for a millisecond before going to orange permanently. I know it's not a grounding issue. What I'm trying to ascertain is if there is any chance that the power supply is causing this issue or if I definitely shorted out the motherboard.

Most likely you have fractured contacts in the ball grid array that connects the chip to the board. The "tighten screws and heat the thing up" BS you find on the internet is garbage. It does more damage than good. The only real solution to the RROD is to reflow the board, which requires special equipment. Anything else will simply damage it beyond repair. There is a good discussion about this on the forum... use the search function for more help.

yeah I've heard that over heating the gpu thing is total horse crap myself. I personally have never tried to fix an xbox 360, simply because using an Internet tutorial seems kind of ridiculous. I found a guide online for opening the clamps using a paper clip, and I tried that out once just to make sure I didn't have to cut it open if I did have a problem. seemed to work fairly fine.
once you get in there, you have what looks like a desk top computer set up, a hard drive, cpu, gpu, motherboard, cd rom drive, etc.
but do you really want to fix something on your own that you haven't seen done before? it's easier with a computer because there is no over heating issue unless you try to over clock something. but with an xbox 360, yes soldering needs to be done, or clamping, or reflowing. doesn't seem like a bad idea to fix it yourself, except if you just watch a video then it's like a first time thing you are trying out. Those people in the videos have probably done that type of stuff like a thousand times. good luck getting it fixed, how much is it to send it in?
I mean you put your own aluminum foil? that's like if I applied a cpu into my brand new motherboard into the heat sink, and used my own specialty brand of thermal paste I mixed together from home chemicals. I'm just saying man, no offense at all, it's just better some times to learn on hand and not just reading things on the internet from guides or videos. Sometimes those guides are really helpful, but this is considering you've already done the process a few times, and are just using it for reference. Good luck did you break that little seal that means you can't send it in to get it fixed anymore?

I'm going to melt my xbox 360 and it's going to be fun. The thing is trashed.
