Can I case jars that are not fully colonized?
    #1487839 - 04/24/03 01:11 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Greets,
The majority of my jars are fully colonized, but some of them have some infection, some of them just aren't fully grown. If I cut off everything but the p.c. mycelia and dunk them in hydrogen peroxide water, will they be safe to use?

thx

Just be patient and wait for them to finish. Is it really worth the risk?

My Advice: Toss out anything with contamination in it. Its bad news. Then, you can cut off any uncolonized portions of the cakes (make sure the center of the cake is colonized before using it), and case the remaining colonized material. I hope to get some other opinions as well, though.

here's what I do. I usually get in a hurry and if like the bottoms are not done, I'd birf the jar get a plastic spoon dipped in alcohol and scoop away the uncolinized part and case with no problem. If they had a spot of contam, I'd toss them outside in a patch

My jars had no holes in them for air exchange, so i had to do this at about 70%... I got as much of hte uncolonized surface off as i could, sacraficing some mycelium in the process. It worked for me, but if you are using brown rice flower, be sure to make sure you get all of it off, as in my experiance it contaminates like a motherfucker. Do it over an oven or something.
