another help me build a desktop thread

laptop is broken, need a computer soon but am on a limited budget. i can only spend 400...maaaybe 500. i could get a mediocre laptop which is a downgrade from the one i just broke in that price range, or i could sink the money into starting a really good desktop. think i'm gonna do the latter.
this is the cpu i'm considering. don't really want to go the AMD route. that leaves about...140-240 for mobo/PSU/fan/case. i've got ram that will work for now, not going to bother with a graphics card at the moment either.

anyone want to offer suggestions on which parts to buy, or something i might have forgotten?

It may be tough with that budget (combined with a high end CPU). What type of RAM do you have? Are you sure it would be compatible with MOBOs for i7?

If you are on such a tight budget, why not get an AMD?
Intel's are expensive. Its like a Lexus vs a Honda, dont bother with the Lexus if you are on a budget.

my brother has 2gb's ddr3 which i am pretty sure will be compatible. i also have an extra hard drive and copy of windows 7.
i guess the reason i wanted that chip is because it's realistically going to be the hardest piece to replace. if i am going to invest in upgrading this for a while, i want a really solid backbone. even if the system is bare bones right now, i can get enough money to buy a graphics card and all the other stuff within 6 months. unfortunately i need something now though. i've heard bad things about AMD, don't know how sound my sources were.

I think that is the motherboard. The CPU is nearly as easy to change as the RAM. (as long as your mobo supports it)
I buy AMD pretty much exclusively, not because I am a fan boy but because my budget is low (though it is higher than yours). I cant fathom why I would spend more on an Intel when my AMD runs games on high settings and does everything else I want just fine.

i was under the impression that mobo's were pretty specialized. ie., if i got a certain mobo+chipset today, chances are the mobo wouldn't support a chip that was released a year or two from now? so they're kind of tied together.
i've seen enough of your posts to trust your judgment about the cpu's though. i'll read some AMD reviews and consider that.

only thing that i need immediately is photoshop/illustrator capability. in the future, with a nice graphics card upgrade, i want to be able to game though.

I'd also recommend AMD if you want to start with a system that has quality components you'll easily be able to upgrade in the future(tower, PSU, HDD, even dual channel DDR3 for the most part with Sandy Bridge cpu's).

If you want to go with intel, and are building one now, go with a Sandy bridge chip. This one is cheaper than the one you linked- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072 a cheap p67 or z68 board can be had, you can go cheap on the PSU but you will probably have to upgrade it later.. better to buy a quality PSU from the get-go. 150-200 isn't much to work with

thank you all for the advice! turns out, i took out the motherboard on my laptop last night and after a few hours of messing around i found some left-over beer residue bridging the power wire inputs that lead to the CPU. after i cleaned it up, it's booting just fine minus, only the keyboard remains broken. i'll make due with a USB one until i have enough funds to properly invest in a new desktop.

You can likely get a cheap replacement laptop keyboard off of ebay. Check it out!

With AMD, yes. With Intel... they change sockets constantly.
I agree AMD makes the best choice. I can run games on high settings and do everything I need with a budget cheaper than the OP laid out.
I really wonder if Intel's nonsense or maybe just people buying the newest items for inexplicable reasons is why I always hear computers are expensive if you want to play games. It doesn't make any sense otherwise.
Rather than paying into intel's illegal trusts, just get a cheap AMD processor, and AM3 motherboard if you want to be able to upgrade in the future, and you'll be fine.

Never made any sense to me either.

i've always had intels and they've never failed me, i guess that's all. i've been drooling over that i7 ever since they released the line. my first gaming PC was a pentium 4 3.4ghz with hyperthreading and it was insane at the time, so when they announced a quad core with hyperthreading...
AMD does look pretty solid. i have nothing against them. for the price, yeah, it probably is a better deal.
*edit - just got newegg's weekly sales, figures... $448
