You come here educating people and you don't even mention the most interesting part of the theory. McKenna believed that date would be the eve of the "singularity," a moment in time that contains more innovation than all the previous billions of years combined.

Some people conceptualize the singularity instead as the day when we create a smarter-than-human computer that continuously improves on itself (since it is smarter than us, we can't improve it). Either way, I believe most scientists predict it way further than 2012, probably 20-40 years from now.
