I am not saying it wont work, just that unless you know your strain will deal with the aromatic woods you are adding another variable to your grow for which you have no base in knowledge to expect results. Sometimes when I am at the mill getting sawdust, I deliberately pick up some pine from the rip saw to mix in for my Reishi, they do not seem to mind, and changing up the structure is a good thing.

In nature there are not allot of wood lovers that grow on coniferous woods, Gannoderma oregonese is one Reishi the PREFERS coniferous woods, sometime you will see chicken of the woods on coniferous trees, but as a rule of thumb I would advise to shy away from those selections. The popular you had would work just fine, softer hardwoods like maple, alder and elms such as box elder will also work just fine. Box elder is a "weed" treed that grows everywhere, and if you have them where you live they are always in someones way, go slash some of them and you are in business.

Good luck with your efforts, your pics indicate you are quite resourceful and creative in you efforts. I am rooting for you.:dancer:

Well I'm definitely seeing primordia of fruits on my jars! They're really tiny and my camera probably won't expose them to well yet. But I'll get pics up as soon as possible.

The main reason I'm posting is to warn you guys about these ultrasonic foggers... I should have heeded people's warnings about their quality. I doesn't fog anymore! Ive heard of them burning out due to extended use, but I only run mine for an hour or two at a time! When I play with the switch just right it will fog again but not for very long. Basically it's a piece of shit. Then again it was only 16 dollars on amazon... I should have kept the receipt.

I guess I'm going back to misting. Too bad... They really seemed to like the fog and the extra warmth...

Attack of the blobs! They remind me of cube mutants...
Left is wood sticks and rice/coffee/sawdust only. Right is the same plus a roll of kraft paper. Both have been cased in damp verm.

Lookin' good camel.  Reishi don't NEED to be cased, but they need to keep their moisture in, so casing works on jars.  I leave mine in the bag now, with one end of the bag open.

I made my first reishi tea today.  I broke apart a piece of reishi, cause I didn't have anything to grind it with, then boiled that for 30 minutes.  It must have worked, cause when I tried that straight, boy was it bitter!  So I added the reishi water to an herbal tea, with a little homemade honey... and still real bitter.  Then, lots of honey... and much better.  Still, not the easiest thing in the world to want to drink, but I like what I hear about it.  Any other suggestions on how to consume?

Boil it with 10-15 dried Ju jubee fruits. The bitterness will be very faint. Plus you get added medicinal properties.

I really like green tea + lots of homegrown mint( i prefer chocolate mint for teas) + reishi.  I normally do this combo for all of the mushrooms i use in teas, the mint really works to bring everything together and eliminate bitterness.  The idea lipa put out sounds good too (if you like fruit teas); ill have to try it.  Enjoy!

Well, I was not going to post a question about the medicinal value of Jujubes. (hint: not the candy!)

I have some Reishi from my first tub of it, but have not made any tea yet.
I will try this.

Take care,

JD

The other jars are starting to form fruits. The one on the bottom right started to get a little cobweb on the edge of the vermiculite. I removed the infected verm and added peroxide to my misting bottle. Sprayed the infected area thoroughly. Hopefully it won't come back.

While I haven't tried jujube fruit with reishi yet, I did switch to honey-lemon green tea (decaffinated), and I don't put as much reishi in.  I put a tablespoon of honey per cup, and I don't even taste the reishi anymore.  I've found that I don't even have to grind the reishi... I just tear off a piece and boil it in a cup in the nuker.  I brought some to sell at the last farmers market- but I didn't get any takers.  Several were interested, but I didn't want to sell it unless they knew what they were getting into.  I may just keep it all for myself, and consume it often.  Won't be long camel and you'll have plenty.

the top two jars are looking for the O2 give them some FAE and they will shelf out, the bottom two are still pinning, give them some time in current conditions, and remember Rieshi can grow kind of "dry" like 70% RH is just fine, the presence of the cobweb may indicate that your conditions a little too wet. May be the addition of a hygrometer it a G ood move to help you more accurately judge your RH.  :goodluck:

Meh, I think I'll let them grow out as antlers a little more. They look cooler that way IMO and I hear they grow faster (and are thus more efficient to grow perhaps, even though conks give more bulk). Everybody has seen a toadstool before (well maybe not a red one). Most people have never seen a fungus that looks like some alien red coral though. It would be really cool to grow them out into one of those ornamental ones I see on the web:

Your right about the humidity though... I must be misting too much. I'll find myself a decent hygrometer.

Good stuff.  I think I'm going to start one of these grows for myself.  Been reading about the medicinal properties of reishi for a while, and have been wanting to get a grow of some sort started, so why not?

I've heard that the medicinal properties of cultivated reishi can be almost nill compared to wild reishi, unless you use "Duan wood".  I'm hoping that's not true, for my sake and for yours Camel.

Either way, looking good.

Good to hear.  I wish I could find the source for that quote again.  It was something posted by Food in another thread about reishi's.  He posted like three long informative posts and one went on to say how "hot house reishi's" were essentially useless for medicinal uses.

Either way I just ordered some reishi LC so I'm in for the long haul at this point!
