Straw vs. Dung
    #1486106 - 04/23/03 12:44 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

The most common bulk substrate for growing P. cubensis seems to be straw, dung, or a blend of the two.

What are the properties of straw and dung? What do they each contribute to the substrate?

How does straw contribute to the substrate?

How does dung?

How does a pure straw substrate compare to a pure dung substrate? What about a mixture of the two?

Which blend (if a blend at all) is best?

I don't like straw as much as dung, it's harder to work with because of its texture. It does drain a lot faster though. The yields are comparable, though I think it's a bit easier to get larger flushes with dung, again, because of consistency of the substrate. Easier to get a nice thick substrate.

agreed!
Straw is a litle more difficult too work with than dung for my friend but mixing some straw into dung is ideal

Well seeing that horse poo is basically straw chewed up and pasted together by something (ewwww) you should see similar results.... I myself have only worked with pure horse shizzy, and loved it. It really produces some monsters when you get the rubbermaid tubs involved.... Either way... good luck.

I have found that straw is very easily contaminated.

I've read that straw is really only good for one flush. I've also read that mushrooms grown with dung or dung\straw are more potent than ones grown on pure straw. It seems like straw is mostly just good for bulking up dung substrate a little bit.

It'd be better for me to grow with straight straw and no dung. Dung is a little harder to get and stinks.

I'd like to work with just pure straw, but it seems pretty weak compared to mixes with dung in them.

Straw is only good for one good flush...hated it.

Horse poo has given me the largest fruits of all....so far.
Horse poo really doesn't stink like you would think it would....smells rather Earthy.

Cow shit and straw is real good.
Cow shit is real dense...the straw makes it more airy.

I've had some bad luck with the compost that I've tried...hopefully that will change with some Zoo Doo compost I'm getting.
Most of the compost that I have tried has ended up out in my yard. :frown:
But my roses and flowers loved the stuff.
lolzz

I'd like to try some Sheep and Elephant poo...haven't tried those yet.

Roadkill

There have been a number of favorable posts on Zoodoo.....from their website, it appears they are in New Zealand, and ship direct. Have you found a store that operates as a re-seller of Zoodoo, or - do you know - is direct ship the only way?

I've had a laundry basket of straw sitting outside, or in a greenhouse for weeks now with Pl. Djamor growing in it. I've seen lizzards and spiders in it, but so far no contams. I 'm beginning to suspect that terrariums may be the wrong way to grow mushrooms.

Ilike dung over straw. Ive never had a contamn on anything...But straw. I find that straw has given me the largest fruits but in lesser #s. Dung just gives you a shitload of very nice sized fruits. I would go with dung.
