What is the site it takes you to? Specifics are needed.
What browser, OS, brand of underwear are you using?
As an initial matter, run malwarebytes and a good virus scan, but this can be a result of a program that was bundled with some download or program you installed (Harry Potter screensaver?) without realizing it, and may be something that isn't per se a virus or malware. The way to remove it in that case depends on the specifics I've asked for.
edit: Download malwarebytes free here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
I don't know what's good for antivirus stuff, though some online scans are: Trend Micro: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ Panda Virus Scan: http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/solutions/activescan/

I don't have any malware/virus scan on my computer. Instead, I keep a backup of all my important files and settings, and about once every few months (or as needed) I completely wipe my system and start fresh.

sounds like the same shit i had/have, first off are you using firefox? If so are you using the "default" home page? If so try changing your homepage and actually type in www.google.com. ; Now close your browser and reopen, does it do searches correctly now?
Next, turn off system recovery, then download avast, install, run a "boot scan". Could take a few hours, but will/should find your problem. When its gone, and windows has rebooted, turn your system recovery back on. Then change your homepage back to default, restart it, and check to see if your searches are working right
p.s. did you ever use hotspot shield before?
