Slants
    #1486209 - 04/23/03 03:13 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Just got a test tube rack and 6 slants. Only bad thing is there not the screw cap ones...just plain ends.

What is the best way to seal these tubes while sterilizing and after when stored????

I'm adding a pic here...tubes are kinda goofy in that there is little arm near the top for like a tube I would imagine. This hole also needs to be plugged. Suggestions please.

there are much better ways of preservation than slants. check out some of the teks on shroomery.com. slants only last a few months even in the fridge. also i think those tubes are going to give you problems...

OK, so I'm thinking I need a permenent plug for the side. As far as the top I'm thinking tyvec rubberbanned down w/ tin foil over the top during sterilization, but as far as the storage phase should I use a rubber or cork plug then plastic wrap over top????

Just stuff it with polyfill and you have a nice vent.

If you have a propane torch, or perhaps even the burner on a gas stove, you could melt those side tubes shut. I have glass tubes and seal the tops with sheets of HDPE plastic and rubber bands. Just don't seal them air-tight in the PC. HDPE is the tough plastic used for grocery or produce bags and it works great for sealing tubes and jars. Any other plastic would melt.

Rubber stoppers work well.  So well, you'd think they were made for closing up test tubes.  Hey, in fact, they are.   Also, a bonus with rubber stoppers: self-healing when you stick a needle through them.

After some reading I'm thinking that the "distilled water teck" is proly the best for long term storage. So I proly won't use these for cultures.

I do think there is potential for a kewl spice rack.

Got it on ebay.

U can get rubber stoppers to fit those tubes perfectly, and some even come with two holes in the top for incoming/outgoing gas exchange or pressure regulation....

Anyway, that would probably be the best way to seal 'em up, if that's what you were askin.
