Another ID Request (pic)
    #1484647 - 04/23/03 01:08 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

We've had quite a bit of rain around here the past 3-4 days so I took full advantage.  Today I found this one about 6 inches away from a decidious tree's stump.  The stem is hollow and the spore print is jet black.  It's bruising to a really soft yellow that's almost white.  The sent is very hard to describe, its kind of a sharp waxy smell.  I'll be able to ID my own mushrooms as soon as I get a fiel guide, which should be soon   Some pics, sorry for the image quality.  I'm still getting used to this digi.

At first glance it looks and sounds like a Coprinus. About this time some of the first Coprinus micaceus should be coming up in Colorado. If it is, then there should be tiny particles (like mica - sort of like glitter) on the surface of the cap. You might have to use a magnifier to see them.

Happy mushrooming!

note that this mica is sometimes absent at time of findeing if there has been rescent rain.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Thanks for the quick replies. I looked at a few more sites and I am almost 100% positive that I have Coprinus micaceus

If it stays wet, once it warms up a bit you can sometimes find clusters of them over a foot across, with hundreds of caps in the cluster.

They are edible, if you get them before the gills change color from white. They're small, but the big clusters will have enough mushrooms that you can gather enough for a good side dish.

Happy mushrooming!

Aren't you in Colorado as well. If so how has this rain been treating you?

Not much yet, but today and tomorrow is the first time this year I'm going to get semi-serious about looking.

I do have these little Geastrums growing in the front yard, though.

If I find anything I'll start a thread and post some photos.
