picked out my lophophora pots

Trying to get my ethnobotanical garden on. I chose some cheap pots from garden ridge that to me had the Indian/ desert theme. In the tank is a mix of perlite, sand from the pet store, miracle grow cactus palm compost and coarse sand pebbles. Im thinking i may add more perlite + cactus compost to the mix. Probably pasteurize it in an oven bag in the stove and finally sow some seeds. May plant some san pedros too. Thinking im gonna put a clear plastic trash bag over the pot to build up humidity for germination. This will b my first serious attempt @ lophophoras. Ive had seedlings before, but none survived as i didnt take care of them. Hope this project comes out well

Good luck! You're in for a great ride I agree on adding more perlite and a little soil to the mix. What I'd do is use your soil mix as-is in small containers for germination, then transplant later to the big pots. You can definitely do it all in one pot, but seedling lophs tend to like a sandier soil that holds more water while bigger plants prefer a fast-draining soil. Just my two cents.

For the longest time I've thought about giving lophora a try. I think it would be so rewarding to grow it from seeds to mature, and harvest. This might just be the inspiration I need to get started myself. After all I live in an apartment with no patio or balcony, but I do have a kitchen window seal and my wife has wanted a potted cactus so she can name it Lucy after Juliette Lewis' potted cactus in the movie Kalifornia.

Reduce the organic matter in your substrate and follow a proven tek, this process as you mention is gonna cause a lot of baby cacti deaths very quick, these were started 5 months ago

Must agree on the sandy stuff for germination, I recently put 6 loph seeds in to germinate with a 50/50 mix of sand and volcanic rock grit/dust with a 100% germination rate and I'm a complete cacti noob tbh...
Btw I found a small pringles tube (washed out) is real quick an easy for germinating loph's, just add a couple of inch of substrate and water as necessary...

A good germination Tek will help loads with regards with what to do and when...
Good luck with em Freddy...

Nice, your soil looks great too! Are you gonna put gravel on top to keep the soil from floating when you water them?

Yes. wasnt too familiar with that, but might as well. Im expecting seeds from a vendor of several species of lophophora williamsii..
Hipolito, grey-blue, El Milagro de Guadelupe. Icamole, Nuevo Leon, Nuevo Yucatan and Sierra Santa Rosa.
kinda just chose them @ random, but i like the idea of having several different species. As i live in Texas, im hoping the weather is well suited for their survival.

To help stop the perlite from floating you can bottom water. Capillary action draws the water up into the soil and the perlite doesn't float this way.

Nice flower! You should have some seeds soon. Have you considered getting some pereskiopsis and doing some grafting?

Yes I'm gonna do some grafting sometime. I was hoping to make a trade here, but it fell thru. I think u can find it locally. I'll eventually graft some, but not all.
Have u seen the hyrdo test tube lophophora? Its bad ass dude. Its lophophora grafted to pereskiopsis grown in a test tube like hydro. I think that's what I'm gonna do when I graft it. And I may graft one onto my san pedro.

Those smaller ones that you have look like the perfect size for grafting to san pedro.
I have seen the hydro test tube thread at the topia. It looks really cool and apparently Anne gets some massive growth from it. However it seems a little labor intensive. You have to empty and refill the water ever other day or so.
