When you say that you need twice as much straw as poo does that mean by mass or by volume? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOOOO.. You don't need twice as much straw as poo.. It's 50/50! That means 50% Straw and 50% Poo.. (remember: the Poo is actually the 'Miracle Grow for Vegatables')
OK, exactly what is that supposed to mean? Are you suggesting poo is the same as Miracle grow? I always thought it was a nice word for 'shit' but what do I know.

1) For this tek we are working with 6 jars.
Get a hammer and nail or drill and put an eraser sized hole in the middle of the lids. Fill this hole with the polyfill. This will allow air exchange and the polyfill prevents harmful bacteria from entering. Put another hole on the inner rim, about 1/4" from the edge, this is where you inject the spores into the jar. Put a piece of electrical tape over the inner rim you have just created. For this experiment we use 6, but you can use more if you choose.
For the second hold, you didn't say how big of a hole... I would read this as make another eraser sized hole.

5) After the pressure cooker has finished, there's no need to open it. Let it cool for 4-5 hours or until the jars are no longer warm to the touch. If the jars are still warm and you inject the spores, the spores might die.
If this is truley a tek for newbies... you may want to tell them to release the pressure before waiting for it to cool... Or they could be waiting a while.

what is the inner rim I have just created, this is confusing to me. Maybe you meant, the hole on the inner rim I've just created.

A friend used an 8qt PC which he bought for $40 and it is not quite tall enough to hold a single QT jar unless the rack is removed which i dont think is advisable, it MIRRO btw...just a heads up.

the jar will still be pressed against the bottom of the PC and the lid will touch the PC cover... DO NOT BLOCK THE VENT PIPE ON THE PC.. and you should have a gap below the jar as well.

true, true. my mini Argos Tower brand pc (?26) holds 3 'quart' jars - 950g jars from olives, actually - but only without the metal rack. a double folded teatowel, 2 inches of water, and i'm always sure to check the vent sits over a gap between jars. works very well!
do not underestimate the importance of keeping that vent free - ask Moe why!

maybe add a comment like " if your PC is too small to acmodate quarts, use 500ml's, they will do just fine... "
and when you fill your jars.. not more than 2/3 full. leave room to shake them later in the cycle.. as the grain will expand when you PC it.

The word 'poo' is used interchangably with the 'Miracle Grow for Vegatables' - I'll make sure to make that more clear.

Good point, noted.

I said its a tek for 'newbies' - not 'stupid people who don't know how to read the directions of their pressure cooker'

The grain really doesn't need to be rinsed (although yes, it should be drained (ill note that)... Water content isn't really all that important. You squeeze it till no more drops of water come out ;] (noted as well)

Blah. Everyone should use quart jars, so much easier. If your pressure cooker is too small, go to Walmart, buy one huge ass mofo pressure cooker, use it for as long as you need it, then return it. (just a thought)
Any other comments? Keep em coming!

Thanks for posting the tek f8l, I'm going to attempt it since the shit that I got from a farmer got soaked last night after I left it out to dry and forgot its going to rain.
How big of pieces should the straw be cut into?
If I'm using four 1/2 quart jars (partially spent) instead of 3 quart jars would I still be succesful? I'd just use a couple less layers.
What yield do you expect to get out of this, and does it have numerous flushes or just 1 big one?

You can get precut straw from "Michaels" or other art supply stores.

I suppose, but why? You are going to get bigger yields with quart jars, more substrate = bigger shrooms

The yield depends. If you are only using a few 1/2 quart jars you probably aren't going to get a big yield. If you follow the tek and use a few quart jars in each rubbermade (I recommend 2 rubbermade containers in case 1 contams), then you will probably get something around 60+ dry grams. Also, most people using this tek usually get a huge first flush and extremely small flushes thereafter. Good luck.

Maintain a 160 degree to 180 degree temperature for 1 hour 20 minutes. If you don't have a temperature gauge, simply by adding more boiling water every 20 minutes you should maintain the temperature.
I think that this is to long for pastuerisation, about half that time would be better (40 minutes) and a thermometer is going to be essential to maintain the correct temprature, otherwise they could easily end up boiling it.
Just my thoughts

Does the water content of your poo and straw matter that much? How wet should it be. Will this directly effect how fast or if the substrate colonizes?
