    #1334462 - 02/25/03 10:36 AM (21 years, 1 month ago)

Well, I was making up some spore prints and I forgot about them for probably about 5-6 days or so, when I looked today, I found them there and they smelt pretty bad, i'm drying them now, but they were all mushy and shit. would they still be a-ok to eat once dried?

well, they rotted in a sterile condition.
it was inside a cooler, inside a tupperware container with plastic wrap all around it.
and container was sterilized pre-spore printing.
So, I'll see what they're like when they dry.
Yeah I'll let you know if my liver starts hurtin and they send me to the hospital.

the reason they are rotting is besause eventhough you took precautions a bacteria of some kind has begun to eat your cap.Hence the rot...rotting is the bacteria digesting and shitting out the bi-products thereof on a microscopic level. The dried remnants hold spores maybe but bacteria definately and would contaminate every jar you innoculated with it contaminated with a bacteria that loves to eat mushroom caps obviously.

the reason your cap rotted had nothing to do with your sterile precautions. The plastic wrap allowed for no gas exhange. The cap couldn't breath with all the moisture so it deteriorated rapidly. Next time try using a 1/2 pint jar and a breathable barrier (tyvek, coffea filters etc.) held in place with a rubber band for a lid. Allow to sit for 1-2 days and you'll be straight.
