First Williamsii Grow - 12 year later update!

So far they look pretty good. I probably should of wrote down when I planted the seeds. But I would guess they are 3-4 months old. A couple are not green. Too much light maybe. But strange since a brown one can be right next to some really healthy looking ones. They have a long way to go.

Good for you man. You are off to a nice start! Do you plan on grafting any of them?

Yeah, those look really good for how young they are. I'm a big fan of grafting myself so I would recommend at least grafting a few of them. I've had super good luck grafting really small lophs to Trichocereus stocks lately.

No, I don't plan on grafting them. I'm not even sure if they will ever be consumed. We'll see in like 10 years from now

Nice man! They look good, and it's all genetics I believe with the size and color. You're able to artificially support ones that may have died in the wild.

Yup, they are under lights. In the basement area at my place I have a 10 gallon breeding tank/quarantine tank I have half filled with water. This pot is set just below the lights and has a couple layers of cheese cloth covering the pot for shading. The pot is completely above the water level. I've also placed the pot outside a few days that it was like 90F out. The tank is heated to 80F so these guys stay right around there (I think anyway, I need a surface thermometer). The light is on for most of the day. I think i'm going to reduce the light duration when winter comes and reduce watering as well.

Just a single florescent bulb made for plants. GE brand I believe.

Cacti love flourescent bulbs for about the first six-12 months of growth. How often do you irrigate them? Keep up the great work!

They can love it for longer depending on the output of said bulbs.

Probably. Nonetheless, I always prefer to get plants to accept full sun as early as possible. "OUT!" Shouted the mother to her child.

I'm not sure how often i've been watering. I've cut back as they have been growing. I'm now at maybe once every week or two. As mentioned above I plan on watering much less in the winter. I water with rain water or aquarium water (how I generally water my plants) in a spray bottle with a drop or two of cactus fertilizer (probably 1/5 recommended dosage).
I think these will live under a combination of real and artificial lights as they get older. I live pretty far north where we have freezing temperatures for 6 months of the year. So i'm not sure if they could make it on natural light alone.

Oh yeah VT would not be a happy climate for any cacti. You're gonna have to get some heavy duty indoor lights.

As long as they don't get the brunt of the cold, the light shouldn't be too bad. It probably wouldn't hurt to supplement it though.

Yeah a T8 4X2 or a high output T5 with according bulbs will put some oopmh into your cacti.
Actually a regular old T12 shop light burned some really young Loph seedlings I hear, so be a little careful.
EDIT: Now that I think about it a T5 or HID bulb (High Pressure Sodium/Metal Halide) would also help with the temperature as well.

I'll post again next year with an update on how they are doing and what lighting Im using. I'm generally pretty good at growing plants. Most of my plants are eipiphites though which like high humidity and cacti like it dry.

Epiphytes are rather finicky so I hear.

Here is another pic to get an idea on how I have them growing. You can see that they are right under the light and the cheese cloth covering the pot.

Young cacti need humidity. After a couple months, they can harden off and become tolerant of low moisture environments like most adult cacti.

They also do well in there because its heated. What's SGFC? Some kind of fruiting chamber? Probably not if there is not enough light.

Returning here to this old post is like revisiting a time capsule, reminding me of the age of my Lophophora. Unbelievably, they have now reached the impressive age of 12 years!
So much has changed over 12 years. I've learned and grown so much. Remarkably, 14 Lophophora cacti from that initial batch 12 years ago still thrive in my care. A few years back I cross pollinated some of these plants and collected seed which I planted and grew on a new generation of these wonderful plants.
Reflecting on my past grow setup, I'm amused by how quaint it appeared. The memory of that betta fish brings a smile to my face. I chuckle at the thought of relying on fluorescent lights – a stark contrast to the LED grow lights that I have been using for what feels like forever. Yet, that's how we did it in those days.
I did finally experiment with grafting these plants (from my latest seedlings) just this past week. It still fresh, but a couple grafts seem to have taken hold. I’m now getting excited about experimenting more with grafting cacti in the future.
As for the update I'm referencing: No, I haven't consumed any of my plants thus far. But who knows what another decade might bring?
Sending positive vibes and green-thumb energy to everyone here on Shroomery!
