Hey everyone, back with some questions. I have one of those heating rocks thats used for reptiles. it was originaly used for my iguana to sit on. I was wondering if this would be a good idea as a heat source for inside my terrerium? or even in an incubation chamber? The heating pad i own even on low gets ungodly hot. This rock i know was on all the time and the iguana still sat on it so im guessing it cant get too hot The Temp. in my area and house are aroung 60-70 throughout the day and prolly dropping to around 50-60 at night. So what do you think? would this rock be a good heat source? Thanks in advance for any help i realy appreciate it, SoulJah

I myself have a heat rock that my Ig. used to lay on. I believe it gets a little warmer than 100 degrees so I dont think I would put it in the terrarium itself. But you could very possibly wrap it in a bath towel to sheild some of the heat and "maybe" put it inside....or if your useing a small terrarium ( I use a glass bowl that fits two 1/2 p. cakes. You could put that on top of the rock. Of course wrapped in a towel yet. I myself havent done this since my method works great. Try it..and watch you temp for a few hours and so on. If its to warm..maybe wrap in another towel..or figure a alternitive method. Good Idea though.

So, I know this isn't a herp forum, but just wanted to also put in that heat rocks are incredibly unreliable and account for a lot of injuries to pet reptiles. The heat isn't evenly distributed in those things and some spots and can get extremely hot. To make matters worse reptiles don't sense changes in heat as readily as mammals do, so they will just chill there all day burning their bellies. In addition, most lizards, including iguanas, should really be getting their heat from an above source, like a lamp. If you must use floor heating you should get heat tape with a rheostat connected to it.
Happy shroomin...

The bottom line, is one should never, EVER heat a terrarium. Heat the room or area the terrarium is in, not the terrarium itself, as has been posted repeatedly. RR
