well the taste and texture was probably marred severely by the fact that they were harvested so late. Next time get them before the caps begin to upturn. Just as the veil is breaking.

Thought so?
But what if i wanted to get some spore prints, is the first flush good enough?
Or should i wait till latter when they grow more bark in color like it says in the kit?
The booklet shows the shrooms much barker an nice an round 2nd an 3rd flushes.
He discribes how they will be light at first then get barker after the first flush.
Back to my question, can i get prints or should i go with mycellium transfers??
Did 1 transfer to maple chips seemed to like it, but got a contame at the bottom of jar.
Try an go to oak an save that mycellium, but if i can get prints ill trade also!!!

I have taken prints from 1st and 2nd shiitake flushes. So I don't know if you need to wait. I would clone it to agar, if you're looking to save the strain.

Ok,Raadt!!
Taking a peace of the stalk like a cube an cloning, i have'nt done yet good?
Seems to rot in the dish without growth, i have tried with buttons to an nill happened.
Can i use the chunk of mycellium to keep the strain going an trancfer to chips also?
Would love to be able to clone good an get a button crop going or others
Have done plenty of petri work with spores but my clones just seem to rot ill keep tryin.

what conditions did you grow in? i just brithed a few shiitake cakes and have them in my cube grow chamber, what are the optimal conditions?

Ya, same as me?
Just used my cube box but no air ill have to hook up the pump this flush.
Hopefully ill have some prints some day here,an maybe trade for a different type?
Had them on pizza an they tasted good got 6 large shrooms first flush.
But let them grow along time thinking i can get spore prints, maybe next flush.
Can anyone tell me how they look an how much they drop, i think there white?

white spore print, very light usually. Especially once it dries, it's almost impossible to see. It's there, though. Just have to use a loop to innoc with, or something similar.

I've printed one in a babyjar and it is difficult but possible to see with the naked eye , a bit like a fingerprint on glass , some faint lines from the gills are noticable , i haven't used the print yet , i find tissue cloning of the inside of the caps easier right now , i cloned on agar , then on a mix of birdseed and rye , 2 weeks later transferred to more grain , plan to go to woodchips-bran mixture to create small sawdustblocks , inoculating with about 10% of the grainspawn , not sure yet wether to pasteurize or sterilize the woodchips , probably i'll follow the tek at mushmush for woodloving species boiling the chips first

Just what i thought i saw some on the counter when i cut them up very light!!
You people are great an thanks again ill try a piece of the cap this flush (clone).
The way i do chips is stearile, also saved some mycellium an tried oak not maple!
The jar is collenizing well so latter ill do more jars an trancfer again an again!!

Speaking of cloning?
how exactly do you use the caps, do you have to scrape the gills out?
And has anyone done this with buttons or others i hope it works better than stems.
just thought that the gills might rot in the petreis thanks again everyone!!

shiitake has enough flesh , you can cut a slice from the top of the hat with a sterile scalpel , remove the topslice and cut pieces out of the sterile flesh underneath and move it to agar or other medium

You cut the cap in half.
inside, just above the gills, is nice luscious cloning tissue.
sort of... where the stalk meets the cap, but inside - split in half.

I did allmine with button stems, with no problems.
Aslong as the tissue used had no outside skin.i.e
inside tissue.Then it should be ok.Fresher the better.

Just did that exact method with button caps hope they catch!!!!
And the shits are starting there 2nd flush, ill try that with them also.

Anyway heres the 2nd flush of shittakies from FP!! my first edibles.
Tried to clone some buttons an it grew mold an rotted again SHIT?
The buttons have to be really fresh i guess? man its hard to grow them! 
Well im makin some spore prints with the Shits,hope they drop something??
They oak chips really is rippin along, there was some contam on the bottom
of the jar an it eat through it like nothing!! So ill bake more chips an transfer! 
HAY!! can anyone show some PICS of button cultures growin please? thanks
  counted 20 shrooms this flush ill be makin pizza now!

Yes i have some good prints from the 2nd flush an they droped good!!
Really had fun growin them but the taste still is not that good to me anyway!
