Noob ? - Is it OK to case at 80% colonization? Thanks
    #1481857 - 04/22/03 10:50 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

I've got 3 of my 12 PF Tek cakes at around 80% and am anxious to get some cased. Common sense tells me it would be ok to case it but I thought I'd ask the experts. Thanks!

Your common sense is wrong. Casing now would almost certainly result in contamination.

Be patient and wait for full colonization.

edit: You could scrape off the uncolonized portions and case what is left, but then you would reduce yields. My friend would just wait.

So you think if I case the cake and cover it with plastic wrap for 3 days or whatever it would still get contaminated? I'm thinking the only time I'm running the risk is during the short time I take the cake out of the jar and crumble it, before applying the casing layer. What is that...30 sec? But you guys are the experts, I will definately do what you say.

ONLY case if you scrape off every little bit of uncolonized cake and more into the colonized part. take their advice.....

Wait for 100% colonized. If you (I mean uh :cough: your friend) opens it too soon you will be exposing your virgin grain to uncountable multitudes of contams (even in just 30 seconds). Let the mycelium get a good foothold before you go and subject it to something like that.

i agree with all these folks saying to wait for it.....however a foaf  has the problem of sometimes his cakes stalling (even after flipping them upside down) and so what she does is uses her fingers and some running water and gets all the uncolonized parts out and even some colonized parts just to be safe....it's worked for him

I had a similar problem once, my jars just stopped colonizing, as if some areas were too dry. (WBS)

I just scooped out what was ready and cased that. WBS is pretty easy to get out of jars - make sure what you use (In my case a spoon) is sterile.

God it so hard to wait!! Maybe I should try to Cracked Corn Tek next time. Everyone is saying that is more than twice as fast! My question is are the nutriant amounts sufficant using just corn and some verm. I'm guessing you get weak flushes but I'm not sure. This is only my third try over 3 years. I yielded a whopping 1 shroom in my first 2 attempts.
