Ocean Kayaking
    #14817372 - 07/24/11 11:46 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

So I am going Kayaking my first time the second weekend of August.

The girlfriend and I will be doing a day lesson, and then renting a double for 3 days and headed up into Desolation sound marine park, leaving from okeover inlet. - I would like to have done a longer trip, but maybe as first timers this will be just fine. Desolation sound is essentially protected waters, without much tide change, and sounds like the perfect place to go out as first timers..

I've done very rudimentary research into this trip (i got sent away to work) so i will mostly be playing it by year, although i'll prepare a detailed gear/food list and develop an approximate route before setting out. It looks like it might be best to paddle out to one of the nearer islands and set up a base camp and then do day trips from there....

So anyone do overnight kayaking trips? Have any advice or stories? Please share if you do!

I do at least two trips a year with different groups, one on the Rappahannock River late Spring and another trip to the Dismal Swamp early Fall. Haven't done any more trips this year, I can't garner any interest from any of my friends. Never any ocean kayaking though, but this is general advice.

Cheap way to keep things dry and has worked well for me in the past, is to use 2 black garbage bags to put your stuff in, knot the top off and put the bag into a backpack so that takes the beating. Turn the backpack inside out as well, so the straps are on the inside.

They present very real entanglement hazards if you bail. Don't have an excess of lines being used to tie your gear down either, and you will want a knife on each of your PFD's, and not a flip out one if possible, and not one in your pocket. You may not have to anchor your bags, might stuff em in the bow. On my packraft I have nowhere to stow stuff, so I have to anchor my things.

It's easy to get toasted on the water too, so don't forget sunscreen and sunglasses really help. You probably know this but avoid cotton, once you get it wet it'll stay wet. A poncho of some sort too, if you get stuck in the rain it sucks, you have no cover typically.

Otherwise have fun, you'll learn exactly what you'll want to start bringing after you go out a few times.

--------------------
External control, are you gonna let them get you?
Do you wanna be a prisoner in the boundaries they set you?
You say you want to be yourself, do you think they'll let you?
They're out to get you.

Alright, so i went - Unfortunately due to time constraints it ended up being a days lesson + 2.5days/2nights.

I had had a headache for 5/6 days before we left and had been away working, therefore very little planning went into the trip, especially in the way of food. We essentially grabbed the ferry schedule, camping gear and dry bags and hoped for the best.

It more or less worked out fantastically. I very quickly picked up the paddle strokes and maneuvering of a single Kayak, and the girlfriend and I quickly learned the maneuvering of the Double. It moves quick, and holds so much cargo! Despite it's size it was very nimble with the use of the rudder.

We ended up paddling close to the 30 miles in total, but had some amazing camping and stops along the way. We spotted eagles, hawks, vultures, crabs, sea stars, jelly fish, etc along the way + TONS of sun bathing seals. The wildlife along the coast is diverse and amazing.

The only challenging part of the trip, was doing large open water crossings and having to deal with yacht wakes. We got caught out on aprox. a 4km crossing and the wind and waves picked up and i think the GF was pretty nervous and not having a good time. I just paddled through it and kept a positive mind set, it was fine IMO and i found that the more open waters were more fun and challenging the quiet waters of the various inlets we passed through.

The low point of the trip, was having loosely planned meals 2 of 3 which were not entirely fantastic. Also, my PFD (personal floatation device) was causing pretty severe armpit chafing, so i went without it mostly (:O) (next time i'll make sure i have comfortable gear before i leave the outfitter... ie. i know not wearing a lifejacket in open water is reckless!)

Hobbs was right, we did get toasted - pretty much got a summers worth of tanning done in 2 days - unfortunately i have a spray skirt strap tan across my chest. :S

Anyways, all in all - sea kayaking is very fun and rewarding. Quite a workout too - i like the challenges we faced and the seeming remoteness of the stops along the way ... i very much look forward to doing a trip or so in the summers from here on out, and could see doing some extended solo journeys in the near future .. probably in the same location as this trip. The best part is, renting a kayak is fairly affordable!

I'll try and post a couple pics of our route and trip later on.

Thanks for the trip report... sounds like a great time!! Lots of sea kayaking here in Michigan! I bought my first Kayak in 1993. Its a fiberglass Wilderness System (Arctic hawk) unlike ur typical touring kayak its a Greenland style kayak 18ft with out a rudder.... and I've fallen for the Greenland style paddles too, freakin love em! about ten years ago i decided to make my own kayak outta fiber glass... the results were excellent!! I'll post a pic of it for you!

on a side note.... did you ever take any of those NOLS classes?

you can clearly tell the store bought from my DIY

Very nice work kindkesey, i would love to make my own wood kayak and canoes sometime in the future, its on the "to do" list ... although i'll have no ability to do so, anytime soon.

BTW, I would to love to hear anything you care to share about building your kayak.

I could see the appeal of the greenland style paddle, and would like to try one sometime. My teacher had a traditional greenland style paddle... and it looked much more comfortable than the clumsy fiberglass paddle i was using, my hands kept slipping on the damn thing.

I never took the NOLS courses, would still like to - but find it more likely that i'll seek some shorter less intense local courses before i ever get around to a full NOLS semester. Who knows though, things change. For awhile i was looking at doing NOLS or the PCT in the next 3 years, but now i am leaning towards the PCT...so NOLS goes on the backburner.
