Neat! We'll be able to keep those SUV's running for many more years thanks to this.

that, is most definately, one of the greatest discoveries of our time. it's like the epitome of recycling!
although it won't help with the atmosphere, or problems with pollution, it will help considerably with waste problems. think about it; we could clean up waste everywhere, and turn it into oil, and make a profit, which is just the motivation society needs to help clean up our little green planet
now, we just need a way to turn air pollution, into something useful

That's pretty interesting. So our energy problems are solved then? What about the environment though?

Widespread adoption of this technology and abandonment of fossil fuels would eliminate the need for any control on CO2 emissions as we would actually be recycling the CO2. Of course as the article shows, this technology could greatly reduce problems of waste disposal. It should also be easier to control emissions of sulfur compounds based on what is turned into oil.
Incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons and the production of NOx would remain problems that should continue to be addressed. Perhaps advancements in fuel cell technology will address these issues better than currently used technologies.
This is not a panacea, but a very big step in the right direction. There is always room for improvement.

Only a small fraction of CO2 emissions come from liquid petroleum. most of it comes from coal.

Is that so? I know this is only for the U.S., but here's a graph from the DOE website.
Fluid fuels are usually a much better alternative for most applications. Strip mining sucks, and underground coal mining is still a dangerous profession.

Why isn't this being reported as "big news" on the mainstream media? I haven't heard anything about it.

It's still in science-geek phase. Discover is pretty mainstream science pub. I've seen this on other internet forums, too.

Because why would they talk about another way to get oil when we're fighting for it in other countries as we speak?
