How to avoid condensation on all your petris * 2
    #14814983 - 07/23/11 07:38 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Anyone who's ever poured their own agar is all too familiar with the condensation that tends to form on the lids as they cool.

Agar solidifies around 100° F. According to some Googling, the idea temperature to pour is around 120°F. This is what RR's agar video describes as "cool enough to handle without gloves".  (I verified this with a infrared thermometer.)

RR's video also suggests stacking petris as they cool because the heat from the dish above helps prevent condensation on the lid on the dish below.  However, the topmost dish inevitably gets condensation as a result.

I don't know why this never occurred to me sooner.  Instead of throwing out used dishes, save a couple and use them as an insulator for the top dish! I put hot water from the tap in one and microwaved it for about 10 seconds (the dishes aren't really microwave friendly -- much more and they'll melt) to get the temp up.  Putting it on top of a sleeve of dishes effectively prevented any condensation from forming.

Top dish filled with hot water on the left, removed showing condensation-free lid below:

Nice tip. I prefer to let mine sit in the glovebox for a few days and "breathe". This is beneficial for two reasons. One, because the condensation evaporates, and two, if anything is wrong with the agar, it'll show up soon enough.

I'm not sure if all petris have the little bumps on the inside of the lids that let them exchange air fairly safely though, but mine do.

Some growers set a hot cup of water on the top dish.  I always just slip them back into the sleeve they come out of and within a day or two all the excess condensation has been reabsorbed back into the agar.  An empty petri dish on top of the stack works as well as one with hot water.  It insulates against the temperature differential, which is the cause of condensation.
