Old wood ?
    #1453051 - 04/12/03 04:20 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

Pllease forgive me if you think I posted this in the wrong forum but I find it hard to get hardwood chips and sawdust where I live so I had a nice long walk in a forest nearby and picked up some old oak and maple logs that were just lying around.

Are these any good to use as a substrate or does the wood have to be fairly fresh?

freshness is relative .
you want dry, but not rotten .
sap=terpintine.rotten=no nutes .

Actually, you want freshly cut. Don't use old stuff.

I recently crumbled up a very old rotten log that wild shrooms had taken over, you could squez the water out of it, I then put it in a jar, p/c'd it and graphed A piece of A pf-cake I sliced off, this was like 4 days ago and it is absalutly spreading out thru the jar very well, i dont know what the end result will be yet, but i've ben thinking about injecting some boiled horse dung liquid into the jar before it is fully colonized, i'm not sure if it will help or not, but i hope my reply can...

I prefer to use old but not rotten wood. The kind you would use for a fire.

i cut fresh wood branches and put them through a shredder.
Fresh is better because the sugar content is higher i think.
So more nutrients.

Yes, fresh wood. Just make sure it's 2 weeks since cutting before you spawn, because live, growing wood has anti-fungal properties. These break down in 2-3 weeks however.

Have you checked your city park caretakers or local tree surgeons. This is the time of year for trimming and our city parks give the chips away (and dung from the stables as well). Many tree surgeons will gladly drop a load of chips in your yard to save the cost they having to haul them.
