hey i dont know if im the only person who finds this odd.
but there is a patch not far from my house which has been sprouting good size subs (appox. 30) everyweek.
this has been going on and continuing sinthe 2nd week of may.
and im 98% sure that season ahs ended.
i mean i checked the patch yesterday and there is a good 20 - 25 young mushrooms already grown.
the mushrooms are subs by the way.
will try to get my hands on a camera so i can provide some picturers.

You answered your own question, the season is obviously still going.

I find that odd in the extreme!  Don't eat them!  With only a 2% probability of the season still going it is extremely unlikely that they are actually mushrooms (AT ALL).

Ok, so I just got back from Europe a few days ago and, feeling a little down for having to return to Wellington's (New Zealand) shit weather, I decided to go see if I could snatch a few mushies. I realize that this is the very tail end of the season, but I haven't taken mushies for years, and when I did, they were some of the best nights of my life.

I've only ever gone hunting once before, and that was with a friend who sort of new what he was doing.

Now, I found these in a native bush area. The specific location was around the edges of a grassed picnic area, where the native bush still grew, but where wood detritus was scattered where the bushland met the grass. The grass has been artificially created to provide a human-friendly entrance to a big bush walk. And the wood detritus was just random bits of wood; not shavings, just bits of dried, dead wood. However, there was some moisture on the ground as it was a cold, clear night/morning here in Wellington. I found half of these little mushies in an area that was getting quite a bit of morning sun (it was about 9am when I went out), and the other half were more or less completely shaded (and would have only received very minimal morning sunlight).

I'm currently trying to get a spore print for the two species that I think I have. (Update: Removed them after about an hour; they came out OK. Just a dark, dusty colour.)

Neither species is bruising a vivid blue - more of just a dark brownblueblack.

If I could get some master identifiers on the case, that would be much appreciated.

I picked these about 4 hours before the photos were taken, for reference.

Species 1:

Habitat: Deciduous woods.

Gills: Range from a dark sand colour, to a dusty brown.

Stem: Creamy-white. Quite fragile.

Cap: Light brown at the centre, tending towards a dark brown towards the outer rim. Approx 2cm diameter. A dry looking cap.

Spore print colour: Brownyblackishgrey.

(Same species, different cap)

Bruising: No definitive colour change was evidenced, although I am certainly a novice, so I may not have bruised them properly, and I may be looking for too much blue.

Location: Wellington, New Zealand.

Species 2:

Habitat: Deciduous woods.

Gills: Dusty brown-grey.

Stem: A light brown.

Cap: A liquid brown colour at the centre, lightening towards the outer rim. Approx 4cm in diameter. A slightly wet looking cap, more so than Species 1.

Spore print colour: Brownyblackishgrey.

Brusing: Nothing evident.

Location: Wellington, New Zealand.

Thanks a lot for helping out. Also, what would be the best way to take these (if they are active)? And how many should I take. Just all of them, considering they are so few? Thanks heeeeeeeeaps!

*hopes wildly that these are active and that tonight is going to be as good as I want it to be*

Hello ateateateate,
Although I dont know the exact species you have there, I can tell you that you have found nothing active.
As for advice, it is the tail end of the season, but they can still be found if you know where to look.

I would go on to elaborately explain how to find these things, but you have already found the goldmine of knowledge. This very thread alone can teach you everything you need to know about hunting actives in NZ, please read through all of it, if you had compared your finds to all the other confirmed active finds and did a bit of research on what you are looking for on this site, you would not have needed to post an ID at all.

Some finds from today

Just another boring woodchip garden - but some people wanted habitat shots so there ya go. It's a development section which originally had an unknown woodchip bed.  This garden has been topped up with woodchip from the surrounding bush (native) this season.  There is a river nearby and the substrate is woodchip / soil / clay

These are not Psilocybe subaeruginosa, they are much more closely related to P. aztecorum.

season is still going strong and usually doesnt stop till late august. found aprox 40 good sized weraroa species today and yesterday found 18 with 1 being a monster size made an awesome tea last night. i would be finding more but due to flooding and large amounts of rain i havent been able to look thoroughly and also no photos however. goldtop species seem to be slowing down. seasons definitely not over tho!

I tried printing my Aztecs and all I got was a bead of moisture, and about 4 maggoty type things (and munched up cops d'oh.  Would partially drying them and then printing be a more likely bet?
