Since no mushroom matter is left in the alcohol extraction it should be all good. But like you suggested, I will start small just incase anything goes wrong. I would hate to lose the last of my subs.Quote:

Really bummed about losing ~105 grams of subs to mould. I'm hoping nothing goes wrong with this tincture, as it's quite possible that today was the last good haul of the season for me.
:-O Wow you need a dehydrator
It's so dry here they just dry out on their own, I just leave them sitting out for a few days...
I've been using my oven at 30C with the door open to dry them. It gets them dry but obviously not dry enough.
Gonna buy lots of damprid before next season. I reckon that would do the best job.
Dehydrator FTW

Is a dehydrator better than desiccant?
Would I be better of dehydrating them, then chucking them in an airtight jar with desiccant as opposed to just using a desiccant chamber?

I use my dehydrator on the max setting... 150F iirc and it gets them cracker dry in 24 hours or less. After that it's to the freezer they go.

Do you worry about potency loss?
Are they cubes? How much do you eat usually? I'm curious. I always wonder if dehydrators are bad for psilocybin.

That sounds like the way to go then!
I'll have to pick myself up a dehydrator... as well as a million other things relating to mushrooms.

That's an issue that's been discussed time and time again around this forum. The fact that people regularly make mushroom tea should be enough to invalidate this myth. Water boils at 200F, which means most tea is made in the 180-200F range. If exposing them to heat in that range resulted in any noticeable potency loss, I doubt the practice would remain popular. IME, exposure to open air for extended periods takes a much bigger toll on potency, which is why I use the 165F setting which takes 24 hours or less, rather than the lowest, 95F setting which takes around 3 days.
Oh, and I just remembered, my dehydrator's max setting is actually 165F.
I've grown regular cubes and PE both... the PE were all dried at 165F and all my friends said they were the most potent shrooms they'd ever had.

Yeah I accidentally dried some subs at 130C for about an hour instead of 30C, and I still tripped off them with no problem.
Can you explain cracker dry for me?
When I oven dry at 30C it takes no more than 10 hours for them to be what I consider 'cracker dry'. By this I mean they are all 'rock hard' and the stems completely snap in half with little force. But obviously I still have some moisture in them.

When you dry your subs under a fan or dehydrator, throw them in the oven for a bit to get that last bit of moister out. always helps perfect

I've done the extraction technique you describe and the tincture is awesome, however I am pretty sure my own extraction didn't work that well because it wasn't as strong as it should have been unless 2/3 of my shrooms were old and bunk.
My next batch I'm going to follow this tek: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=1&Number=5068121&PHPSESSID=&fpart=1#5068121

This is one of the many reasons why I love living in a desert. Cracker dry in <24 hours just by leaving them out on a counter or table.

Alright, I'm finally at the stage where I'm ready to do this.
Only problem is there is no Dan Murphy's in Tassie, and none of the bottleshops here that I've been to seem to sell anything better than Bacardi 151. I will still keep looking though.
If worst comes to worst though, will Bacardi 151 be sufficient enough for the job?
EDIT: Could it be possible to add something like anhydrous magnesium sulphate to the Bacardi 151 to lower the water content?

Bacardi 151 should be ok, read a couple threads that use it. Just won't be as pure I'd say.
Not sure about adding that other stuff someone else might have more insight
Maybe Dan murpheys delivers? That would be handy as!

Yeah they do deliveries, but they don't deliver the Polish spirit, which is annoying.
I'll get some Bacardi tomorrow and report back.

So, I got my Bacardi 151. 750ml for $75.
Now, the recipe for the tincture says I need 10ml of alcohol per 1g of mush. I have a lot more than 75g I want to work with.
So, I will use 50g/500ml for the tincture.
Then, if all goes well I'll use 30g or so and try a vinegar extraction.
Will report back later tonight.
