Buying first smart phone.

So I'm looking at the LG Android Optimus V. It's one of those pay as you go phones (the only kind of phone I buy).

Cost: $150 Monthly: $25 (UNLIMITED Data + Text, and 300 minutes of talk)
I don't talk much, so this looks like a really sweet deal.
Are there any other phones out there I should be aware of before making my purchase.
PS: I think I'm gonna root it if I get it.

What kind of plan is that? Where can I get a hold of that phone plan?

Pay as you go.
You buy a card at the store each month for $25, enter in the code and BOOM, next month is paid for.
No contract.

I have been THRILLED with my Samsung Droid Charge 4G, but it's only on Verizon.... so I guess that doesn't help much. I just wanted to talk about my awesome phone

My first smartphone I just got was the
Samsung Galaxy Captivate.
Pretty fucking awesome. Im loving it.
It was $50 with a new 3 year plan through Rogers.
Or $500 with no plan.

Unlimited data - is that true unlimited or are you capped at a certain amount, or only unlimited on 3g not 4g? That is a killer phone plan, which makes me think there have to be some strings attached to the data. I've seen a lot of shady plans where they say thing like UNLIMITED DATA* up to 1gb, or UNLIMITED DATA *on 3g network (when you're pretty much forced into 4g).

I've spent some time about a month ago finding out what smartphone I would pick if I had the chance (because I need a new phone myself and a smartphone was an option). I specifically looked into the LG Optimus, but decided against it since it seems that LG is a bit less proficient in software development than its competitors. This shows in stability and performance issues, as well as reduced battery time. Personally, I would pick the Samsung Galaxy SII at this moment; hardware-wise, it's about comparable (or slightly better) than the LG, but more importantly, the software is a bit more stable and it performs better.

I have unlimited 4G/LTE data, but no new customers ever will. My unlimited plan was grandfathered in, so at least for the time being, I get to enjoy the blazing speeds and uncapped data.
At home my phone gets an average of 25 Mbps down, and tops out at about 32 Mbps. If only there were that many things to d/l on a phone. Like it's nice that HD YouTube vids load instantly, and I can download even the largest apps in a couple seconds, but there are only so many vids and apps I need to d/l.
Still fun to do the speed test and brag to my friends with iPhones about it

same here man. i was all sad when i dropped my G1 in the sink and had to buy a new phone a few months ago, but i'm actually happy now because when i bought the new one i extended my contract an additional 2 years. t-mobile is gonna crap on the unlimited data plans pretty soon when they merge with at&t, so i consider it a minor victory.
those are some insane speeds though. who is your carrier? mine claims 25mbps but most i've seen is 15 on a full bar connection.

Verizon in New Orleans.
I almost shit my pants when I first got this phone and came home and did the speed test.
Perhaps I fluff a little... it would probably be more accurate to say that I get an average of 20 Mbps, but 25 is not uncommon outside of the tall buildings in the CBD, and I've only seen the 32Mbps once.
