All I know is that alot of them grow around here. I think they're somehow used in the process of making tequila, but I don't know anything about that.

This one is huge, it's about 6ft tall and has a bunch of younger ones around the base of it. Some of the ones nearby are starting to begin to grow that huge flower stalk.

I don't think it's a cactus.
They only flower once in their life....after they flower, they die!

it's a succulent, and it's used in the process of making tequila, it really doesn't have any special properties other than it makes a damn fine jam or jelly.

That type of Agave in your pic isn't very common around my area, but if you drive a short way into the mountains theres alot of different types of Agave, on our property we just have the ones that I posted a pic of.
I was walking through the desert today and found this fella fairly close to my house, just starting to flower. I'm going to try to take a picture of it every now and then to show the progression from a small shoot, to a huge flower, some of these flower shoots that come out of this species of Agave can get HUGE, like 15+ feet.
