Ecuadorians and Mazatapecs - Mini Tubs - Second Flush Starting!!!
    #14810787 - 07/22/11 08:35 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

The Lost Ecuadorians and Mazatapec

July 22

I had 8 Ecuadorian jars and spawned 5 of them to a tub in Grow 2.5. Somehow, I misplaced 3 of them after spawning the rest. I figured since I have a small tub from Grow 1.0 that I grew some Burmese in, and left over coir from the 5 kilo bricks, that I might as well just whip up a batch of substrate and spawn the jars. Otherwise it would be such a waste of perfectly good spawn!

I basically just used a half recipe of Damion5050's Coir Tek to spawn these 3 jars. I took a 5 gallon bucket, 325 grams of Botanicare Coco Gro, 1 quart vermiculite, 1/4 cup gypsum, and mixed it all up thoroughly, then I brought 2 quarts of water to a full rolling boil and dumped it in the bucket and stirred it up. Needless to say, it was hot as fuck.

No casing layer. Never used one, don't plan on it. I've never had any contamination, and the substrate colonizes pretty quickly. Also, I don't use a trash bag. Not my deal. I forgot to cover the bottom sides of the tub with duct tape. It's sitting in the dark at the moment where it will colonize over the next 7-14 days (depending how I'm feeling about it) so its not too important at the moment. But the sides will be taped up tonight or tomorrow.

July 29

I had 2 Mazatapec jars fully colonized, and I decided to make a batch of Damion5050's Coir, and make a mini monotub. This tub is even smaller than the tub the Ecuadorians are in. I Drilled one 2" hole on each side of the tub and filled with Polyfill. Then I dumped less than half of the coir in the tub and mixed in the 2 jars.

August 1

The Mazatapec tub is lookin great. The Ecuadorian tub doesn't look like its done anything in the past few days. I should probably start fruiting it, but I'll be gone for a couple days and won't be able to fan it and mist it. Although I may be able to find a babysitter for a couple days.

Ecuadorian

Mazatapec

August 3

The Ecuadorian tubs has half a dozen tiny pins popping up. (May be considered 'primordia' at this point.) Took the tub out of my closet and put it in my room. I'm just letting the sunlight that lights up that room be the light to trigger the pinning instead of getting another light and setting it up. The tub looks great and smells like mushrooms. I let it consolidate for 12 days before fruiting it.

The Mazatapec tub is doing great too. Extremely rhizomorphic mycelium. It's a week behind the Ecuadorian tub, so today is day 5 of consolidation. I think I'll start fruiting it around mid next week.

August 4

Minor update, my Ecuadorian tub has about a dozen pins in it. The largest being about 1" tall. Everything looks great. Will get pictures up as soon as possible. Looks like it's going to be a fairly nice first harvest.

August 7

The Mazatapec tub has been in my closet consolidating for 9 days. It looked good enough for me to start fruiting. so I put it in my room next to the Ecuadorian tub. The only light it gets is the sunlight that gets through the blinds, which is plenty enough to help induce the pinning. I'm fanning these tubs like crazy.

August 8

I already have pins in my Mazatapec tub after one day of fruiting. My Ecuadorian tub has a few mushrooms that are about to get picked after I post this. I'll be taking some spore prints from some of them on petri dishes in a glove box. Might as well stock up on as many spore as I can!!!

Ecuadorians

Mazatapec

August 11

The Mazatapec pictures are current pictures of the tub. I haven't harvested any Mazatapecs quite yet. Only 1 day after putting it in my room with light, I had pins popping up. Now, 5 days into fruiting, the Mazatapec tub looks like this:

Mazatapec

Ecuador

The pictures of the Ecuadorian's are from the past day or 2. I have over 40 grams dried so far of Ecuadorian's. I think the tub is starting its second flush now. There's still about a dozen small mushrooms in the tub almost mature enough to harvest.

This time around, after I harvested, I took a sharp knife and sliced off a little bit of the bottom of each mushroom, completely cleaning the coir and vermiculite from them. The final product turned out perfect. No shake in the bag. Just beautiful, fully intact (for the most part) mushrooms.

40 grams of dried Ecuadorians, and the last harvest of the first flush. These were the smallest mushrooms from the first harvest.

I've probably got another 7-10 grams in the dehydrator. So, the Ecuadorians are going on their second flush while the Mazatapecs are starting their first. Will update with final weight from first Ecuador harvest.

August 13

The Ecuadorians are either completely done flushing, or getting ready for another one. I can't tell. either way I'm still fanning off every hour or so. I got 60 grams even from that tub.

The Mazatapec tub is doing great! I think I'll be harvesting some of them tomorrow night and the day after. Lots of clusters. Definitely going to take some prints and clone some clusters.

August 15

The Mazatapec tub is doing great. The tub looks awesome. I've harvested a half dozen mushrooms or so and am taking a couple of prints. When the clusters grow out and get ready to harvest, I'm be taking a few clones.

The Ecuadorian tub is starting its, I think, second flush. Pins are popping up more and more.

August 20

The Mazatapecs were harvested a few days ago, and the second flush is coming on quite strong. mostly side pins. I took a new tub, one of my larger ones, drilled 2" holes out, and placed the Mazatapec substrate into the new tub. I did this so it has enough room on each side for all the mushroomed to grow.

As for the Ecuadorians, I harvested the second flush already. Didn't get any pictures. There were less than the first time around, but they were some beautiful mushrooms.

Stay tuned!!!

amen.

ill give this 10 days to consolidate, then start fruiting. after i induce fruiting, im sure ill have pins in 5-7 days, then a week after that ill be harvesting. so im guessing 3 weeks and ill have mushrooms poppin up.

keep in mind ive got a bunch of tubs going right now, and more jars on the way. im going to have plenty of cool stuff to check out.

Pf Albino is hard to get prints from, or at least I have never been able to get them to print. Maybe it's something I'm doing.
Don't want to hyjack the thread, just thought I would chime in.

i might give it a try and attempt some prints. but its almost pointless because of the amount of liquid culture i have, and am about to make.

id wait until the caps start cracking, because thats definitely when spores are dropping. take the cap and put it on a petri dish over black paper, or something extremely dark. the spores are clear, so after 24 hours, you should see something

updated the log. wondering if i should start fruiting my ecuadorian tub or not. the top of the substrate doesnt like it its done too much in the last few days.

i know i need to tape the sides up on the mazatapec tub. im going to wait until i fruit it to do that. i want to see the entire thing colonized before fruiting.

curious, for your second flush of the Mazatapec, did you do anything to the substrate after transplanting to the larger tub?

I've been hearing about dunking cakes for second flushes, but I'm not using cakes but doing a bulk tub like yourself and am curious if there is anything in particular I should do to the substrate to ensure a good second/third flush

cakes you just dunk em for 12-24 hours and fruit again.

with my tubs, after each harvest ill mist the substrate heavily and fan. and repeat a few times over the next day or 2, and then go back to regular mistings and fannings.

im not comfortable with dunking my tubs. seems like a bad idea to me. misting the shit out of the substrate seems like a much better idea to me.
