How to get a good price on a gym membership?

I quit smoking cigarettes cold turkey last Sunday and I'm looking around for gym memberships. Distance is important and it looks like LA Fitness is the only one near me that looks like they have decent equipment but I'm not sure of the pricing. I joined Bally's a while ago and got severely ripped off and I was hoping you guys could give me some advice on how to talk them down in price. I'm fine with a $35/month membership fee, I just don't want to pay any kind of sign up fee; although they do charge first and last month's fees up front. I'm thinking maybe if I DO pay more up front, I can maybe lower them down to $20-$25/month?
Any ideas?

Are you a student? Lots of gyms offer student discounts.. the gym I'm currently at is $55/month, but with my student discount it's only $35.
Also, look around for smaller, local gyms. The bigger ones with fancier names, commercials, ads, etc. will charge a lot more for the same equipment but in a "cleaner" or "higher-class" environment.
Other than that.. tell them you can really only afford $35/month.. they might make you sign a contract for a longer term but that will only encourage you to stick with it.

Some places have income based sliding scale type membership fees. I don't know your financial situation... I have a Y membership for $20/month and the joiner fee was all but waived. The Y has just about everything I could ever need.

id totally recommend buying a 2-3 year plan, and paying up front. it will equal out to about $12 a month, with the option of a low yearly rate after your plan is up. Mine ends a year from now and will cost $75/year after that (24 hours fit.)
I got a friend grandfathered in from some 1990s rate at $22 a year from the same type of plan.

I used my guest pass tonight around 10pm to check the place out... it's HUGE. Bigger than I thought it'd be, which I like. I know when I go at peak hours it'll look a lot smaller but I'm very happy with what I saw. The place was clean and the equipment I used worked on the first try. I've been to gyms before where I'd step on the elliptical and go for a few minutes, then it would start doing this "skipping" motion, kind of hard to describe but I didn't feel like I was getting the full range of motion. It would piss me off because my heart rate was right where I wanted it and I'd have to step down, wipe it off, and switch machines mid workout. That didn't happen here. I use the elliptical as my main cardio machine, hence the concern. None of the machines had out of order signs on them, there was plenty of sanitizer at the stations, there is ample equipment and amenities, the staff (at least from what I saw) is friendly; I'm feeling good about this place.
Another main selling point is the WOMEN!! Holy freakin crap there are some 10's in there. I seem to work out harder and longer in the presence of sweaty, attractive females and this place is chock full of em.
Come payday I'm going to try to haggle my way into a decent price and get a membership. I'm sold.

Well I just signed up, I got in at $45/month without a joining fee and no contract so I can cancel any time.

Nice, Congrats Newbie!
why do you want to be able to cancel at any time? is it like a might move soon situation, or just not sure if youll be motivated to go 2-3 months from now? $45 is steep in my books, id keep talkin to employees to see if you can hook onto a better deal. I paid $500 for 3 years + training = 11ish months @ $45
Either way start hittin those weights! Im trying to go every other day right now, and it feels great.

Just in case my financial situation changes, which it damn well could. I'm not planning on cancelling but he said I can always switch to contract and lower monthly payments down the road, it's negotiable.

Try looking into a local community college. They often have "weight classes" which means that you need to log in x amount of hours over the semester.
$26 for 18 weeks.
