Quart BRF?
    #1480910 - 04/22/03 01:41 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

My usual method for growing mushrooms is to spawn colonized birdseed into straw or dung and case with coco coir and vermiculite. but sometimes i have an odd jar left over or not enough room in the grow chamber...so...i was thinking of making quart jar sized brown rice flour cakes in wide mouth mason jars. if i wanted to spawn i could just break the cake up in a blender or if i chose i could plop the cake out, cut it in half and fruit the two halves as PF tek style cakes. does any one see why this wouldn't work? would the BRF colonized too slowly in a quart jar?

Quart BRF would work but it would be slow to colonize and be hard to get to colonize completely. Those who care to deal with quarts usually fill the jars 1/2 to 2/3rds full with grain and skip the verm. Whole grains colonize quicker and the jars can be shaken if they stall.

My friend is doing some BRF in 500ml jars. They are taking forever to colonize.

It would take forever and a day. Unless you have a syringe with a really long needle and a lot of innoculant.(sp?)

Inoculant is not hard for him to come by, he just didn't prepare enough syringes for the job. He should have used twice as many.

would it speed the growth through the entire jar if one were to shake the jar to spread the colonization? PPL do this with whole grain cultures. I just finished the wait your friend is experiencing, and I wonder if the shake would have helped.

Yeah, BRF is not really a shakeable substrate.
