Pl. djamor Visions' basket -- Final Results.
    #1467497 - 04/17/03 02:07 PM (21 years, 5 days ago)

I started these from syringe on popcorn, and waited a little too long to spawn to straw. Conditions have been less than ideal for most of the colonization stage, but pretty good for most of the fruiting stage.

It fruited once already in poor conditions. I got one fruit about 2 inches wide off of that. after I picked that off I decided it may be dry so I dunked the entire basket underwater for about 8 hours. It was much more permeable than a BRF cake, so I decided that was enough. The next day it was noticably heavier, so I figured it must have done the trick.

A few days later it started fruiting all over, and now about 5 days into fruiting, I have this:

I've done oysters once before. It was from a Fungi Perfecti kit, they were blue/gray. I got mostly stems with tiny caps. I put it in a Sterilite tub with perlite all PF style, but I don't think it got enough air.

This is much better.

wow, very nice!

what did you fruit that monster in? or just leave it covered with plastic and mist it in true vision fashion?

I skipped the plastic bag, and am fruiting it in a greenhouse. Daytime temps in mid to upper 80's humidity unknown, but pretty high.

Before that I had it sitting outside most of the time. It was fairly humid most of the time, but with temps between 50-70 and breezy, if it got cooler than that I brought it in and set it in my bedroom, temps in the mid-seventies but low humidity. I misted every day, but that stiff breeze still dried it out I think. Dunking seemed to bring it back to life.

How do you tell when it's time to pick these things? Do I just wait untill they have stopped growing?

I would say to pick them once you start to notice sporulation. I just go by what size I think works for me, and what i want to eat. But that's just me.

I hope these taste better than the last ones. Got any good pointers/recipes/links on how to prepare oysters?

Very nice....very nice indeed. Garlic, salt, pepper, and butter. Cook them a little bit longer than you usually would a mushroom.

Three days later, and sporulation has begun. I'm picking them today. They are noticibly softer, and downright limp. I hope I didn't wait too long.

I believe they are supposed to be picked as the pink starts to fade. So yeah, i think they might be late. But, you should get a 2nd flush np. I'd eat em anyways, might not taste as good as they would otherwise though. I dont eat that many oysters though, i don't like em too much. Usually give them away to people, from my grows.

THey tast alright. I fried some up with some onions and roast beef, and made me a sammich outta that, and some swiss cheese.

I think I might attempt that second flush now that you mention it. I think I got about 3 pounds off it already.

Hmmm. I haven't made egg drop soup in a while. I'll have to try that.

Too bad djamor is such a pain in the ass to culture. I started two plates from the popcorn I used to spawn the straw, and all they did was fruit off the kernal in the dish.

I started a PF jar with the same syringe, and just today cut out a couple chunks from the center, and put them on agar. The damn PF jar had already started fruiting through the tape on the top.

I have the plates sitting in the dark now. Hopefully they'll take.

I was under the impression that once djamor went into fruiting mode it wouldn't revert back to veg. I figured cloning from fruitbody would be even more hopeless.

If these two don't take, I'll be taking you up on that offer.

Update: I still have this basket. It is my "dirty laundry" basket. It had a twin, but I left it sitting at the laundromat for several hours one night and someone stole it.

I should do another grow in it. I should have picked these sooner. I gave a big bag of them to a lady at the post office. This was back when I still had a somewhat successful eBay business. Though, by 3003 it was pretty much in the shitter.
