I agree I live gulf coast TX also and can't find straw anywhere.  I use Alfafa(?sp) Hay for my Oysters and a friend sends me straw once a month for other edibles.

I thought I had read that alfalfa hay wouldn't work. Have you had any problems with it?

I lose a few(5-10%) to contams but once you get them colonized they will put out four or more good flushes.  I do a bleach soak overnight and then heat pasteurize.  The bales I get are in plastic and are already cut in 2" pieces but they cost $9.  I will try to get a picture for later.

Already cut into 2-3" pieces.:super:

I don't have any current grows going but here is one that I tossed in my garden after 5 flushes and it is still fruiting outside and it is 100f.

Apologies to Oysterhead, the OP, for getting off course again. But getting back to work with other substrates, I have some show and tell.

A few pages back (about 7 weeks ago) I buried some eucalyptus chips in a cardboard box filled with a jar of oyster spawn. It took awhile, considering the patch was in full, exposed sun. But to my surprise it recently fruited. I just picked the big sucker today: 193 grams! Enjoy the photos

Here it was yesterday:

Today with my hand next to it for scale. Woohoo baby!

Compared to my other shaded grows, this one is "sunburned" and much darker toned. My neighbor thought it was golden. Beautiful!

Fuck yeaaaaaaaaaaaah

The biggest disadvantage, however, of casing them with soil is all the soil particles I have to clean out of them when they pop up and expand. I'm thinking of doing future projects with a simple wood chips or small rocks casing.

Thanks dude! It's now flushed about 4 or 5 times. So much protein, yum!

Great news - I think. I found a source for baled oat straw reasonably nearby. However, the source states that some heads have been left on the straw. Is that okay? And wouldn't the presence of heads mean it is oat hay and not oat straw?

Any ideas? I leave tomorrow morning and need to call this guy today to make arrangements for pickup. As a PITA as it might be, would it be okay if I removed whatever heads are there or is it even necessary?

Looks like I found my answer via a drawn out search. I hope there aren't too many heads!
