(?) to John Allen about his Thailand strains.
    #1480264 - 04/21/03 10:20 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

This is mostly to John Allen(The guy who orriginally picked these mushrooms)or anyone else that has grown either the strain of Koh Samui, or Lipa Yai. I'm very interested in both of these strains(mostly Koh Samui though)and I am anxious to learn more about them. What I really want to know is, if either of these strains are in anyway forgiving to fluctuating/low temps. I'm curious of this, because the only possible grow room in my house is my closit. I have no way to constantly monitor and change temps in my terrarium, and it could get a little below 75 in there at some points(I'm actually not completely positive of what the temp is in there now, or what it will be changing to overnight, during day, ect. Untill I get a thermomitor in there, I can only guess.) Anyway, if anyone knows the deal about the Koh Samui, and Lipa Yai, and their reaction to fluctuating/low temps, let me know. Thanks for any help guys!

If you can grow otehr cubes you are most likely able to grow these.

P.S. John Allen is a member here at the boards under the handle, Mushroom John.

I know, which is why this post is mainly addressed to him. ;-)

And I haven't grown any mushrooms before, all this is purely experimental.  Once I find out the true temp of my 'grow room' I'm gonna figure out the temp of a Rubbermaid box(my terrarium) with a bunch of blankets over it.  If the temp is low, or fluctuates A LOT, I think I will just grow B+ :frown:.  I've read they are pretty forgiving when it comes to temp/humidity.

Do many people find that you need to find an outside source(ie- aquarium heaters) to heat your terrarium when it's in your house, otherwise then just a box with possibly needed blankets or what not?

Room temperature is quite alright for the fruiting cycle of cubensis. As long as your room is within the normal room temperature range, heating would probably do more harm than good.

Agreed. Don't heat a terrarium. Room temp is perfect.

Aeonblue, would you mind showing me in the FAQ where it speaks of the Koh Samui, or Lipa Yai, and how well these strains do in a environment of fluctuating temps?

i really wouldn't worry about temps too much. between 70 and 80 and youre golden. i dont know about any more fluctuation than that, maybe someone else does. lower than 70=slower growth. what temps we talkin here bro?

I doubt it would drop under 70, I'm in easter PA, so around this time, temps are usually warm/hot as hell, but right now it's fairly cold. This room how ever stays nice and warm, thanks to the multiple computers I am running(Yes, I'm a computer nerd). The closit I am growing in does not necesserally feel cold, but not warm. I guess the only way to really tell would be a thermomitor(yea I know who doesn't have a thermomitor around right?)but I don't have one at the time. I'm sure the closit is NO colder then room temp, so I think I will be fine.

Put a heater on there with a thermostat, but, learn from my mistake PLEASE.... learn what temps the heater will do on what settings before putting precious innoculated jars in there (Lets all have a moment of silence for the 3/4ths of my jars that died from heat exposure) Thats why ya gotta be careful with heating thingies.

A small furry woodland animal has grown Yipi Lai. It was forgiving enough. But doesn't really dig too much on temps below 75degrees F. In a small furry woodland animal's experience, the thai strains like it nice and warm. He found that his first flush was stimulated when the temperature in the room was accidentaly raised to 85degrees overnight.

SInce those wild specimens were picked on the same island in thailand id expect the parameters to be pretty similar.
Ko samui is a better quality spore race in my opinion.
Cubies are hardy - they will grow under varied conditions.
