Say Hi To Big Bertha - AA75X Score!

Sorry, gotta brag about this... Scored it on eBay for $270 plus shipping. Not too bad. The much smaller AA25X was a $50 score on a garage sale about a year ago. Both hold pressure without issues. Patience in this hobby will pay off Look Mom and Son next to each other

Those are freakin spectacular! I have a couple of questions though. Are they technically autoclaves? Also, I see a plug, do you put those on a stove or do they just "turn on"? Last one, how many regular mouth quart jars can the big one hold? Thanks for indulging me.

AA calls each a sterilizer, which is pretty synonymous with autoclave. These have their own heating element, so no stove is needed, just an outlet.

16-18 jars?
do those sterilizers take about the same amount of time as the PC equivalent?

Word. IIRC RR says somewhere that without the inner basket he can fit 20 jars in it I only had a test run since I got it with a few bags for Gymnopilus up till today (I'm doing jars this time) so we'll see. I played around with it and empty quarts, but 16-18 sounds more plausable

Actually you can easily cut back on sterilization times with these, because you can sterilize at 20psi instead of 15. I usually do 1hr for quart jars and 2hrs for larger substrate bags at 20psi.

Let me know how it goes... We got grain ready to go tomorrow... All ive got to do is pressurize mine up...
If i recall correctly... PP said he could shove 18 jars into his without the basket, on top of the stand that covers the heating element...

So the heating element is inside the "pot" i guess you would call it? For some reason i always thought it would be below but that makes sense as far as efficiency.

It's basically a big steel pot with a heating element inside, then you have a basket that goes in that. You don't have to use the basket as long as you use a spacer though.

Hi,
Sorry to revive thread, I have just received my AA75X. By spacer you mean a towel above the bottom rack or is the rack provided enough? I was just going to pile my jars as usual where the rack is (water limit is at rack level on the new models 2013 onward). Glad it can be used without the container, I felt ripped off on the volume for a minute
