Casing 1 cake
    #1479911 - 04/21/03 06:25 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

This one guy from college had cased one cake since it finished before the rest into a layer of coir/verm as verbatim from the tek, substrate, coir/verm.  He also wanted to add that a miscalculation caused the top layer to be way too thin, and some mycel clumps were sticking above the top layer of coir/verm.  Its only been four days.  Now he sees fuzzy growth over 60% of the casing.

1. Is it most likely cobweb or mycellium? It doesnt smell that bad.
2. should he cold-shock it before over lay possibly occurs?  Because there are no pins in sight, or should he try to add another layer of coir/verm?

Thanks so much  :smirk:

Nah, he looked at the pics, and its def not overly, yet, but all the pics didnt help really and the digi cam is non-operational...Hes leaning toward cobweb since it went so fast, but it couldve also went fast because so substrate was so close to the surface?????

Do you have an optimal incubator? Is it still snow white, or does it tend to look greyish?

Its white, real wispy, not like the start of mycel invitro...the incubator is just 2 tupperwares one with perlite and the other with the casing, rh=78% temp=75F....thanks pitdawg

OK I'm a bit confused. Usually an incubator is kept around 80-85 I know that 75 is better than say 60, but I think you are referring to a fruiting chamber, which would require humidity. I think thats why you have the perlite in there? If dogs are incubating there is no need for rH, in a casing, thats why you put the coir in there  Let us know, and your welcome

no no no, its not incubating cause mycel already poked thru, its in the fruiting chamber now...i guess dont worry about it, ill just wait to see wat happens i just need to kno if i should cold shock it or just leave it to see if pins eventually develop.

Ahhh ok, then my dogs would leave the thing in there. Lay down and watch the fruits of his labor come into being. I believe Anno posted about fruiting at higher temps, and I know I do it all the time. Sometimes I have to worry about cooling the ter. down. You should be ok if you dont get above 75. Good Luck.

same thing happened to me

i cased 1 cake in a coco/verm casing with a very thing casing layer...like just enough to cover the spawn...the growth looked very wispy over the whole thing...but it didnt puff out and explode like cobweb does..it looks like really thin mycelium

it was in fruiting chamber for 2 weeks and nothing happened...so i deep scrathed down the spawn and am still waiting
