Using fresh(ish) rabbit manure
    #13642106 - 12/16/10 01:34 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

So before I ask any questions, I'm gonna summarize my search results so my questions are clear.

In searching the forums, I've generally come to the conclusion that:
(1) Fresh manure is not good to use, because it's needs leeching.
(2) Leeching primarily removes ammonia from manure, which is no good for the mycelium.
(3) Leeching secondarily allows for some composting/reduction of OM into compost and therefor reduces amounts of varying microorganisms.
(4) Rabbit manure (not piss, mind you) is high in nitrogen and phosphorous.

So in the case of my rabbit, and her cage/poop-setup is this: she has a box in her cage in the corner where she pisses EXCLUSIVELY. And it contains all the piss. (It's gross, I hate cleaning it, but it really smells like ammonia like f-ing WOW.) The rest of her cage is filled with bits of (timothy) hay and little (dry, pissless) poop-pellets.

I've read plenty about manure, a fair amount about rabbit manure in particular, and a fair amount about leeching, and have concluded that I could probably get away with (and admittedly, probably not with BEST results) using these fresh dried manure pellets/hay mixture as a bulk substrate, perhaps even without leeching anymore than the pasteurization provides in the hot water soak and drain.

Since most of the posts I read STRONGLY advocated extensive leeching, almost to the point of superstition, I intend to do the following (in order to prove beyond any doubt whether or not this is effective), unless anyone has some real convincing evidence or arguments to suggest that I'm wasting my time completely;

I'll inoculate the following with a liquid culture (mycelium syringe from a colonized WBS-jar):
One half-pint jar of completely unleeched, pastuerized manure and straw mixture.
One half-pint jar of completely unleeched, sterilized (120 mins, 15 PSI) manure and straw mixture.
One half-pint jar of speed leeched*, pastuerized manure and straw mixture.
One half-pint jar of speed leeched*, sterilized (120 mins, 15 PSI) manure and straw mixture.

My process of speed leeching is soaking in warm (not above pasteurization temps, probabaly about 110F-130F) water overnight, draining, then running tap water through the manure in a colander for several hours the next day. Then draining and either pasteurizing or sterilizing.

I am only even harvesting the first portion manure just now (I need to clean the cage at least 2 times to get 2 pints of manure), so it'll be a little while until I can post results, but I'll update when there are results, good or bad.

Criticism and nay-saying is welcome.

So I harvested two coffee tins full of manure-pellets; for the record, no detectable smell of ammonia. Just kinda smells vaguely like hay/earth.
