I'm curious as to the percentage of the total yield of the tub was achieved in that first flush. I tend to get about half the first flush for the second flush and almost as much on the third, are you finding about that as well?

I didn't bother to weigh the second flush, but it wasn't overly impressive. Rough guess is probably about 4-5 oz's dried. The third flush is pinning nicely now.

I usually use Wheat Berries or Rye Berries, however sometimes I get bored and use rice. They all make great spawn as long as you know how to prepare each accordingly. As far as automated tubs failing, that just means your not doing it right. You have to dial them in, no different than a martha.
Once dialed in you can sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor .

This is an amazing post and I am inspired.  I have a few questions though.  I see that pump is an Active Auqa but can you tell me where you got it at?  Also, could you describe it further?  I've looked up Active Aqua and while there's a large selection, I'm interested in one like yours that has at least 8 output valves.

Also, nice idea about the outdoor light fixture.  I bet you can get that just about anywhere, correct?

Lastly, are you using a normal drug store ultra sonic or are you using that bucket thing I saw in your martha pic?  And how do you distribute fog to multiple units with only one fogger.  I mean I can think of how it's possible, but I want to know how you're doing it.

Thanks in advance for the insight.

EDIT:  These pumps look pretty heavy duty, can one just plug them into a normal wall socket?  For example, the one I'm looking at right now
http://www.csnstores.com/Hydrofarm-12-Outlet-Commercial-Air-Pump-AAPA110L-HYF1036.html?refid=GPA49-HYF1036&gclid=CMfl-Y79pKoCFcTBKgodR0eHYA#shipping

has a 112 wattage rating, is that a plug for a normal socket?  I should know these things, I know.

I picked the pump up at a local hydroponics store for about $100. I don't have the box with me, so i can't give you the exact specs but the one you are looking at will work just fine.

The air output nozzle on the pump hooks up to  1/2" diameter high pressure rated rubber tubing, which then connects to the single large nozzle at the back of your chrome outlet divider. I bought the divider seperately and it had 8 nozzles, but you can get one with 12.
The smaller nozzles connect to 1/4" rubber hosing and that is what you run to your tubs for FAE. Each nozzle has a valve to adjust the rate of air flow. If you are only running 4 tubs, you can just shut the valves off on the other four nozzles. It plugs into a standard wall outlet.

Here is the exact model of Vicks Ultrasonic I use.

You distribute the fog to multiple tubs by something like this(Borrowed the pic).

I don't think I've seen anyone else mention it besides you. I use it on all my tubs and have been for awhile now. Maybe a few more people will pick up on it.

Thanks

I tend to believe that there is only so much available surface area for fruiting... I mean, when you think about it, the sub. block doesn't have enough time to knot up in the areas that are picked on the first flush... nor would that be biologically efficient.. the nutes closest to the area of a fruit have been exhausted... so if you have a full canopy on the first flush, chances are much of the available fruiting area isn't available anymore.  So if you have a thick substrate depth, you're probably going to end up with less fruit coming from places that weren't fruiting on first flush (i.e. the sides since the substrate has shrunk, yet "reserve" knots still developed) but larger in size.

There just isn't enough time from first flush to second for "new" knots to form.. maybe new knots will form in the "picked" areas on the third or fourth, but by that time, if all environmental conditions were correct, the sub just doesn't have the energy to make them.  Not to mention that the stage for knotting has passed.  So basically I'm saying that you can know how your sequential flushes will turn out based on how each flush performs knowing that your fruiting surface is limited to already producing fruits in the flushes prior.  Of course this isn't proven, but shit, it makes sense to me..

I agree that when a full canopy or even close to one is achieved on the first flush your fruiting area becomes substantially limited on the second flush. So what if after the first flush, you dunk and then turn your substrate upside down and place back into your mono-tub. The bottom is undisturbed and is often fully knotted, similar to how fully colonized rye jar will knot up if left for an extended period of time but hasn't fruited due to no FAE. I'm curious if you can achieve two stellar flushes in this fashion. Any thoughts?

I know I've definitely tried it before, but I think what happened is it just fruited from the top (then the bottom because I flipped it) so I abandoned the idea, but that was just one time, so you may want to give it a whirl.

Awesome setup, that last pic really shows how easy it would be to automate multiple tubs, do you notice the first tubs collecting more moisture than the ones further down the line?

It distributes relatively even. As pressure builds in the first tub the fog is naturally pushed to the others, this happens within a minute or so.

I do it with my bags, or turn them on their side. Pins generally will form on the bottom far more then the top after the first flush, since pins havnt formed there yet.

3rd flush, this was the bottom for the first flush, now its the side:

I do put a nice thick layer of coir/verm on the bottom of the bag, as well as the top, with my mixed substrate in the middle. The top and bottom of the bag usually are just finishing colonizing during the first flush.

This is a 92 Qt tub. I know afoaf actually doing something similar. It's a sick set up.
