BitTorrent: What the fuck?
#14792865 - 07/19/11 02:53 PM (12 years, 9 months ago) |

I've been downloading torrents for as long as I can remember. Never had a problem.
Now, I've had 3 notices from my ISP for downloading copyrighted material. Not threatening, just alerting me that it's happening, because it could be something out of my control. Obviously, I have to stop doing what I'm doing, or risk the consequences.
My question: is there a way to download torrents without allowing myself to be tracked? Is there a way to share files other than bittorrent that I'm not aware of that might be better than torrents?
These RIAA and DMCA fuckers think they're going to stop piracy. HA!
They're going to have to start releasing movies and music in a format that can only play on a dedicated player, and even then, someone will convert it within a couple hours. The people.
Movies are one thing, music is another. What kind of *real* musicians wouldn't want their music to be free and available to everyone? I understand they have to make a living, but some of the best music comes from underground musicians before they ever see a dime. All I'm saying is, these anti-piracy people think that online copyright infringement is costing our economy billions, and costing Americans' their jobs, when in reality they're just trying to make their point and steal money from people. (the point is "we have more money than you and we will show you who's boss").
Anyone care to enlighten me? Maybe tell me I'm terribly misled?

In utorrent, preferences tab, bittorrent: I have checks in all but Enable DHT Network, Enable DHT for new torrents, and limit local peer bandwidth.
Also, outgoing protocol encryption says "disabled" there is a check by "allow incoming legacy connections"
Is one of my settings what is making it so easy for them to figure out exactly what I'm downloading?!

No, the trackers you are going too. Places like the Pirate Bay and Demonoid are public, anybody can join and view everybody else who is connected's IP. Its better to use invite only private sites, then if a narc joins he gets booted and people get alerted. Or, use newsgroups/usenet - its a bit safer than torrents.

Try using PeerBlock. http://www.peerblock.com/
It blocks incoming and outgoing connections to Internet IP addresses that are included on blocklists accessible over the Internet which may be selected by the user, but also any addresses manually specified by the user.
^^^ I took that bit from the Wiki. It's a phenomenal program.

My biggest problem is that I don't understand how all this shit works, and therefore don't understand exactly how they can figure me out. So obviously there's no way I can understand HOW I can NOT be identified.

You can join a private tracker. You generally need to be invited by someone you know personally. I am a member of quite a few, but I am not a member of any private movie tracker. When it comes to fetching movies I use usenet like Seuss mentions. Usenet costs a small amount of money per month, but is the fastest and safest way to go.
Ask some of your friends about private torrent trackers, and look for a FAQ or intro to using usenet/newsgroups.

^^this is the only thing that will save you, and i imagine eventually they will find a way around that as well.
"private" places are obviously not private if you can get hooked up in under an hour with an invite. Peerblock uses a list to block access to those trying to watch you, the problem is it can only block what is on it, which is only a small fraction of whats out there. and utorrent is kind of sketchy, vuze is a nicer program with more features

This is especially true if you have a really good broadband connection. Since getting DOCSIS 3.0 I can download at 40 Mbps from USENET. I've been using Giganews because they give their Diamond service for like $17 a month, and if you cancel they'll email you in a week giving you another 50% off. It gives you a free 256-bit VPN using UDP encapsulation as well as SSL. Neither of these slow down the download speeds. It's a bit more difficult to get legitimate downloads, but if you go the USENET route then pick stuff with a longer retention time.

I've gotten a few notices after using demonoid, so I avoid that for most things. There are actually quite a few awesome private trackers, and like everyone else said; usenet/private trackers/VPN services/peerblocker etc... Notices dont really mean much, the worst they will do is suspend your service for a minute, but they will be very reluctant to permanently ban you or sue you. Just be careful, avoid public nonsense.

Very true, but while using Peerblock, it's better to block a fraction than nothing.

Yeah, my buddy's received a couple of notices, and all they really tell him to do is to stop sharing it, and to take it off his shared drive. It's not really a big deal. Your ISP doesn't really care what you're downloading, all they care is that you're paying money to use their bandwidth. They have to abide by laws though, so they kinda tell you to just knock it off. But if it was up to them, you could download all you wanted.

Wow, you sure have a self righteous attitude for someone who is basically doing what amounts to theft of something that lots of people have spent lots of time and energy to produce.
Yes, the reality is that it is and probably will continue to be easy to pirate media thanks to technology(The People ). Why you go directly from that to a complete fuck you attitude towards the artist I'll never understand. I guess that's how you rationalize your gratuitous theft.
Yes, most "*real*" musicians are simply happy to have people hear and appreciate their work. And heaven forbid they should be able to expect some support from the people who consume their efforts so eagerly. You are basically saying that the work of an artist has no tangible value and those assholes should just be grateful that you are willing to listen to/watch their work. What a little shit you appear to be.
As for the multiple letters, you are getting them because you are probably one of those assholes who downloads and seeds huge amounts constantly, especially newer shit that studios have a lot invested in like the absolutely lame Harry Potter films that you probably enjoy thoroughly. It's no help to the downloading "community" but if you limit how much you upload you're less likely to trigger a response from those stupid fuckers who dare question your thoughtless theft. So basically, just leech and don't seed - should come naturally for someone with a thieving disposition.
I love your last point the most, "moies are one thing, music is another". You're saying you can see why movie studios want their money but musicians can just fuck themselves. Question, have you ever bought music directly from an artist? Pretty sure I already know the answer to that question. These days you can usually do it on their website for a few dollars, not that you ever will since musicians are just here for your fickle entertainment and certainly aren't worthy of any support from you. Just jesters in your mind where you and your interests are king.
And your last point is just hilarious, "in reality they're just trying to make their point and steal money from people".

You're right, it is a little self righteous of me, but don't think I have a "fuck you attitude" towards the artist.
I really don't know how to respond to you, because it seems you have too much contempt for me to be reasonable.
I own most of my favorite movies, albums, etc. If I like it, I buy it. I buy tickets, and go to shows, supporting my favorite artists. I support the local scene in my city, and am an active musician.
You've made me take a look at myself, and why I use torrents, and I still don't feel that bad.
Why do you automatically assume that I am 100% against any kind of support for the artist? I absolutely show support.
I do not download or upload massive amounts of data for shits and grins. I use torrents to download dated stuff, never to watch anything new. Fuck, I see new movies IN THE THEATER, then wait 2 years before I might download it. I seed appropriately, but not so much to draw attention. I do not make copies, or burn anything to disc.
Are you really so honest that you don't download anything without paying for it?
