How to process and store after cultivation?
    #1477924 - 04/20/03 11:06 PM (21 years, 1 day ago)

My personal method is a non-heat dehydrator, vaccum seal bags with dessecant paks and refridgerate.

I have heard of freeze drying etc.
I have also frozen the cubensis and later found them to not have quite the same effect. ( anyone know why this is? )

Any other suggestions for storage?

Also I have been curious on the effects of microwaving on the psilocin and psilocybin molecules and the subsequent result. Any info on that one?

Thanks to all of you in advance.

...and with psilocybin/psilocin, it causes it to oxidize...as it does that...it looses the potency of those 'vitamins' you love so much....

SWIM built a small (less than 1' by 2' desiccating chamber w/two cranked-up fans in it, which forces the air through A) desiccant of choice and then B) the fruits to be dried, with some appropriate filtration in between (to avoid drierite/DampRid particles contaminating the fruits - yuck).

Freeze-drying *would* be perfect, provided one had the means & equipment to do it (maximum preservation).  Most of us don?t.

Barring *absolute* desiccation (id est, COMPLETELY anhydrous fruits - not an iota of H2O in it) freezing shroooms will, to the best of my knowledge, leave you with a green, nasty, virtually zero-potency mess.  SWIM advises against it, unless complete freedom from H2O & O2 is assured.

Yep.  Fan dry em for the first day (preferably w/dehumidified air), then stick them into an airtight container w/a desiccant in the refrigerator (or at least someplace dark & cool).  FWIW, you can also pick up a vacuum desiccator that has NO heating element for about $25 USD:

http://www.scientificsonline.com/ec/Products/Display.cfm?CategoryID=323486

SWIM hasn?t bothered using this to actually dry them, though that would probably work fine; instead, SWIM uses this to store them in a mostly O2-free environment...And w/the addition of some desiccant in a closed tyvek sachet at the bottom, no more hydration-related decomposition probs

And with a 1.1 Litre capacity, it fits neatly in most fridge doors, as well as holding ENOUGH SHROOOMS TO PEEL THE PAINT OFF YOUR SOUL.

Uhm, if that kinda thing is what you?re after.  Not that SWIM recommends anything like that....But you get the idea ;D

Considering that even the slightest amount of environmental interaction causes psilocybin/psilocin to dephosphoralyte (sp?)/Oxidize/Give up the Ghost, SWIM *cannot* imagine a dose of S-band radiation (microwaves = 2.325GHZ frequency RF, or thereabouts) could do anything BUT bad things to them...Such as destroy them utterly.  X-Band (10.525GHZ RF) is usually adequate to cause severe denaturing of proteins (like the ones found in one?s choroid, if memory serves), and SWIM seems to recall that was a problem with S-band RF, as well....

Having never actually tried it, however, SWIM could be entirely mistaken.  If someone has tried this, please post here for the edification of all.

Cheers,

~YSJ~

Storing them in oil will prevent oxidation. Heating them in oil will also remove any residual h2o, just don't let it get too hot. Another method is to powder after drying well and mix in peanut butter; high oil content and keeps out light

This is wrong. If cellular water doesn't have a surface to crystalize on it wont freeze. Also, many animals increase electrolyte concentrations (near lethal) so their cells wont freeze.

Do a search on some .edu domains about "amphibians and freezing"

Reptiles also do this.

my dogs been using the "anubis tek" which he discovered in the FAQs of this website. he's found that he can fit well over two ounces in a 1/2 pint jar after the powder has been pressed. as a result, it takes up very little space in the fridge. because of how compacted the material is, there is little room for any air in the jar, which help keep it potent. also, he's found that people's stomachs have a tendancy to absorb more of the material because of how finely ground it is. you can make capsules with it or mix it with a drink.
