well I just wanted to post this thread to mention that I am not actually asking a question here. I didn't want people to think that I'm getting deep into linux and need a hand held walk through. Just wanted to post a little bit about my experience so far:
I believe I'm using ubuntu 10.4 knaty, I forget which version, ok so I'm a newb
anyway, the packages were pretty easy to update, there is a command for that. Am having a bit of trouble with an intel chip, I found some commands online that look like this:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto
it did end up listing my my audio as an intel chip, and I thought I updated the driver/codec but it doesn't seem as though I did so. Oh well I'll get back around to it at least I can list my hardware and then it will list the manufacturer if you use the syntax to search for it. I think that is incorrect for audio though because the sound chip is definitely intel but it listed my chip as an amd which is actually my graphics card. But maybe that command searches for a pci card, which would explain it. Anyway moving on for now
I tried installing apache server from this site:
https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverguide/C/httpd.html
and this was the resulting syntax

so apparently I have a server that isn't on or running dns? Amazing. But maybe I'm wrong. Now with windows, to run a server, I believe you download lamp as vmware, then install a trial copy of microsoft server 2008 r2 by downloading the iso, then mounting the iso into the virtual d: drive of the virtual machine. None of this was required to run the sudo install apache command, so I actually don't know what I did. Still, apache is free, you can run a domain apparently on the fucking internet, modify it with php or sequel, completely free. I mean how crazy is that??
So my first day review for ubuntu? Well, it's completely free, what else could you want? I mean it takes a billion commands, and can't do half the music, pictures, games, movies that windows can do. But so what? I could start a server farm, and use linux with no license. Haven't had much experience with wine compatibility but have heard that with each distro of linux wine gets better and better. Anyway I'm a newb with computers and programming, but honestly ubuntu is fucking awesome. A bit a hassle for the non programmer type, but so far I feel like I'm using the star trek enterprise computer for free, only with more commands I think I found a new future best friend. Let's hope me and unix go places. Also an awesome note from cosmic joke:
"aye, i know it, also on a similar note, try lspci in terminal...
actually apple put together the first commercially successful gui, though it wasn't a unix based operating system at the time like OS X is today. keep with linux and as a bonus you'll know all the essentials of OS X and FreeBSD, on a fundamental level, it's all the same shit."
linux apparently has some half way compatibility with every single operating system that exists, I mean does this os get better and better or what? Yeah, if you want the latest direct x and codecs and hd movies streamed to a terabyte hard drive, don't go with linux, go with mac or windows, it's simpler. But if you want to try a big boy computer, install linux
UPDATE: I think I found out why the command is listing my graphics card: cat /proc/asound/card0/codec* | grep Codec lists card 0, I think that is assuming that your sound card is in the first pci slot, in which case it would be card zero. I have an intel onboard audio chip, so it wouldn't be card zero. ANOTHER UPDATE: sound was muted.
