Method other than science to gain understanding?

I have heard this claim thousands of times, but not one clearly defining what this astounding alternative is.
For the duration of this thread let us limit understanding to mean general non-personal understanding; i.e. understanding the mechanics of the world; not that one should let go of the past or forgive or some other personal psychological issue.

I can form a philosophy to understand the world that includes science, personal experience, and external experiences. Or I can form a philosophy to understand that includes experience but excludes science. Or I can form a philosophy to understand the world that relies exclusively on science.
Philosophy is a flexible means of understanding the world that is not solely dependent upon science.

What are you hoping to gain from this post if not understanding? Is this a scientific post? Could I replicate your method and get the same results?

Havnt you sort of created a tautology? If you consider only the mechanics of the world, then obviously science is the important method of inquiry. What if 'understanding the mechanics of the world' is one of various things to understand? In that case, science is just one important method of inquiry.

Direct experience, obviously.

Isn't science all about gaining direct experience to either verify or dismiss.
Wilber's Sense and Soul addresses this very topic.

Is pure mathematics a science? What about logical analysis? Don't these things involve understanding?

It may be a tautology from our perspective, as we have explored and embraced the differences between mechanics and ineffable experience. But I reckon most/many people have not developed a clear differentiation between mechanics vs. ineffable experience nor between science and greater philosophy or spirituality. Other people (most I believe) don't make such a clear distinction between these ideas (either out of ignorance or simply a different culture and world view).

What about those who don't make such a distinction because it isn't realistic? No one uses only scientific findings to go about life but everyone uses their understanding of the world to do so.
