after cakes are totally colonized can they be dunked in 1/2 pint jars or will i need to use something else seeing as how they're almost the same size. I was thinking about using the jars or some empty margarine containers. And for the water should i just head on down to the store and buy a gallon of distilled water?

what's the best material for casing? i was considering getting some of that Jiffy Mix stuff because i don't really want to worry about th ph level. i don't know, it's my first time attempting to grow and i really want this work without worrying about contamination. i'm not really concerned about getting massive amounts. I got three cakes and figured they'd be enough. but if it's really easier to case and enough people convince me to, perhaps i will

If you are worried about dunking, then inject. Less Messy, less chance of conatms.

since small scale is all you are looking for, but better than cakes, use a 100% vermiculite layer. and also perlite on the bottom gives your casing a huge kick in the fatass monster generation. 1/2 wet perlite on bottom and 3" or so of substrate to 1/2" or so of casing/verm layer-definetely the easiest way to go(and verm on the bottom works too-your options are numerous.) On the dunking bit...
Magash uses his jars to dunk his cakes. He outs some water in the jar and then puts the cake in. Close, seal with palstic wrap, and then refrigerate for 24 hours.

well it obviously works for him-and any way to get the most water possible to the cakes will work-but your best bet is casing, and if you keep it simple with verm, then pretty reliable w/o contam's and good fruits.

yeah. i'm gonna go for casing. probably just the straight verm so i don't have to worry about ph levels. My jars aren't even fully colonized yet, i just inverted them tonight so hopefully in the next few days the whole outsides will be colonized.
should i sterelize the material i'm going to use for casing?
thanks for all the help guys

probs dont come up as often with verm as with 50/50 so dont bother sterilizing, and the bags that ive seen say sterile vermiculite on them anyway.

i've got another question about lighting... i have a small black light/fixture that'd work perfectly with my set up. If i bought a flourescent light to use with the fixture, do you think it'd be safe?

you don't need ANY other light a black light tube is "PERFECT" they give off the exact nanometers of light that FUGU is reffering to in order to induce pinning. As for casing right away i'd wait ...I mean there is a reason that most people today start off with PF style cakes. You take the chance of losing your entire cake that you've been waiting for to colonize only to some contam during casing. I take PF cakes and inject/24hrdunk.I take a full 12cc syringe of water and in the same holes that I innoculted a half pint jar I inject the cake until I can see water "oooozzzzeing" from the mycellium pores and keep doing this in each hole until the cake inside the jar is floating. Then cold shock/dunk for 24hrs.You wouldn't think that a little cake would fruit a large flush but you'll be suprised. As long as you use sterile procedures while injecting, and by leaving them to float in their original containers you never even have to handle your cakes until absolutly nessasary.

Fanaticus claims that using Black Lights will eventually cause youre mushrooms to mutate. So I would recommend you not use the Black tube and go with the flourescent. Edit: I think he said thats where he got his Albinos from. I think

I'd case. My friend says letting spores drop on the casing layer is the easiest way to get contams, but I'd sterilize and adjust for pH anyway. These are simple steps that can save your crop

yeah i wasn't going to use the actual blacklight. i can't find any normal flourescent tubes that are equivalant in length so i'm just going to buy one of those bulbs that screw into a normal fixture. they have some "daylight" bulbs for 4 bucks.
