One of the main intake vents in the laptop seems to be plugged with cat hair, unit gets to hot to touch, I can't take it apart because it would take a complete dis-assembly to get to the problem, what are my options?
It get so hot it seems to kill batteries.

What model laptop is it (the exact brand & model)? It's pretty easy to get a back cover off most of the time that will expose some area of the heatsink/fan. Even if you can't get direct access, but can get a straw from a can of Dustoff in the area of the heatsink/fan, then you sill may be able to get a good deal (or all) of the shit out of there.
Alternatively, put on wrist strap that will ground you and use a vacuum cleaner to suck the shit out of there. In the future invest in a laptop stand because they're really worth it. I use a cheap Belkin stand that has a fan that gets powered via a USB port on my laptop. It has an air inlet on the sides and blows air up under the laptop while not completely being flush against the bottom of the laptop. So it allows for airflow, catches large debris, and helps with cooling since most inlets are in areas that could get cut-off when on soft clothing or something. They also can put them at a more comfortable angle for your wrists if you're laying down, or even sitting in my experience.

Well, there are little holes that seem plugged, perhaps I could go at them with a needle from outside the case...
This is quite a problem. it is a compaq, Persario QC61 Notebook PC.
It works well, except for the preloaded crap and the overheating, (and windows rot, but no avoiding that)

Taking the laptop apart & cleaning the insides with a compressed air canister works best. Most modern laptops have covers/access panels that are relatively easy to take off. (They allow for easy access to the mobo/cooling coils/fans/etc.)
I've never tried using a vacuum on a laptop before though. Doesn't really sound that safe. o_O'

well, to get to the clogged panel, I'd have to take the motherboard out completely and some of the screws apear to have been over torqued in factory so I think I'm fucked.

If the vents are clogged so that there is no airflow over the heat sink, then teh laptop stand isn't going to help.
> I can't take it apart because it would take a complete dis-assembly to get to the problem, what are my options?
You can take it apart, but as you said, it will require an almost complete disassembly. If you do not feel comfortable doing that, you can take it in to a computer store. You might have luck with a strong shop vac and a can of compressed air. Alternate between the two, blowing air into the vents to loosen crap up, then use the shop vac to suck the loose crap out. Repeat.

Best advice. If you can't take it apart this is the next best thing. You may want to stick a toothpick or paperclip or something in the intake fans (to block them from moving), so they aren't spinning freely while blowing/sucking air, as this could damage them

thanks guys. I got it half disassembled and was like god damn, and put it back together.
I'm a desk top guy.
I'll try blowing and sucking as you suggest.

You should only have to take the back cover off to get access to the heatsink though. Usually (I think) the motherboard is pretty much directly beneath the keyboard, then there's some space for the heatsink, ram slots, disk drive etc. between it and the bottom cover. It shouldn't be too hard to do - I did it lots of times with my old laptop. Though I tried with my new one, just to see what it looks like, and rounded off the last screw that was/is done up really tight...

the heat seems to be localized to the left back corner, where the plugged vent screen is.

It depends on the laptop. Some have panels for easy access to the heatsink, others you may have to completely disassemble the entire thing. It's best to do that anyway to completely clean it out, but a can of compressed air and a shop vac is the next best thing.
