How many g2g's is too many?
    #14774623 - 07/15/11 07:59 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Hi everyone, a recent experiment of mine (which I will do a full post on when the fruits finally get here) was successful and I am about to do some serious g2g. I'm just wondering how many I can do before the mycelium gets too old. I was hoping to do at last 3 rounds, 1jar to 8 each time.My grain masters were inoculated with multispore LC exactly 4 weeks ago if that helps

As always any help or advice is greatly appreciated

I researched the same thing quite a bit recently.  Roger Rabbit had a post where he said at around the 4th or 5th generation the myc isn't as effective....So I decided I'd stop at 3 generations.  Hope that helps.

I wonder why the tiny bit of 'old' mycelium in the growth would cause the newly grown mycelium to be no good? I guess that's a question of genetics. In the wild, mushrooms are primarily spreading by dropping their spores rather than extended myc growth underground (I think). This book by Stamets I have on mush cultivation really supports G2G for the amount of myc that can *potentially* be created, though chucking after a certain # of generations is never mentioned.

Ive read numerous posts that warn against letting your spawn grow to old. And the same thing for agar work. RR mentions this in the master culture slant section of his videos, but doesn't give a specific time frame or number of generations

well in 3 generations you should be able to g2g 1,000 jars

Its not about how many 'generations', more about how much the mycelium has traveled/spread

This is correct.  Most of you are using the word 'generation' wrong in this thread.  A generation is going from spores to fruits and back to spores again for the next generation.

When it comes to grain to grain transfers, there's not a set 'number' of transfers you can do.  Obviously, 5 grain to grain transfers with pints is a bit different than 5 grain to grain transfers with large spawn bags.  Age of the mycelium also plays a role.  If you let the grains sit for a week or two after colonization before G2G, you can't do as many transfers before senescence sets in.

When I'm rapidly expanding mycelium, I'll do 5 G2G transfers before calling it good and starting over with a fresh, low P-value culture.

Just thought Id update. Just did my first ever grain-to-grain transfer (1 wbs jar to 8 rye jars) one week ago. I just checked the jars and I had a 100% success rate! I see a mono tub in my near future! :awebigvaped:
