Question about tumbling stones.

I recently got a three pound barrel rotary tumbler. I had one as a kid and basically know what they do and I read some stuff on the internet. I was hoping some one here might have personal experience they could share comments with me or perhaps particularly discuss working with obsidian.

I had one as a kid, but I never really paid attention to what I put in there. Toss in a handful of rocks, some water, and some polish and wait to see the results. If I remember correctly, there were two or three different grades of polish that would have to be changed out once a week or so.

He has a barrel rotary tumbler (rock polisher) that holds three pounds of rocks. You fill the barrel with rocks, water, and a polish (or grit), put a lid on the barrel, put it on its side, and a motor slowly turns it. The rocks inside the barrel smash against each other, and the polish, and slowly erode away their sharp edges. After a few weeks you have a barrel full of smooth, polished rocks. He is asking if anybody has experience working with obsidian in one of these. Obsidian likes to shatter making very sharp edges, but it can also be ground and polished into really nice looking gems. I don't know which way it will go in the tumbler.

supposedly plastic beads are key to the final stages for obsidean polishing. And I'm doin't one big rock,so there should be minimal damage.
