Help me find woodlovers down-under
    #1462500 - 04/15/03 11:46 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

I've never found a wood-loving Psilocybe down under, any help would be appreciated.

I usually look in the wood chips and mulch in public gardens and around public buildings. Is this a good place in NSW? I usually find many other types of mushrooms there.

I hear they sprout after heavy rain in cold temperatures. Somebody said 10 Deg C (50 Deg F), but I'm not sure it gets that cold here - except sometimes at night in the middle of winter. Does that mean I shouldn't bother looking?

Furthermore, I'm assuming the more damp and shaded places are the best.

Does all this sound right? Any other tips? Do they even grow in my area? (Hunter Valley, NSW)

Thanks everyone. If I'm able to post some pretty pictures sometime soon it'll be due to your help!

im thinking us in nsw will have to wait till the weather gets more miserable... there has been a little rain recently but it's still early days and temperatures are probably only starting to get fairly cold just recently ... BOM says showers forecast for the next 7 days, so with any luck we'll all get lucky!

So no woodlovers yet, or very little, but is it too late in the season for dunglovers? I'm waiting for the next rains, haven't been out for a while. Last time I went out there were plenty of types around. I found one small dunglover in some horse excrement but everything else I came across was inactive. I'm gonna keep trying in eucalypt forests and paddocks, haven't tried the pine forests yet...you think the dunglovers will keep getting rarer now? Between dung lover and wood lover seasons....is there anything we can find, or do we just wait?

Dung lovers will definitely be getting rarer now, but I still think there may be some around. Not for much longer though.

Nothing yet, as far as my regular spots go. Last season started pretty late actually, but from what I remember there was a big drought. Give it a little more time, I think it's still not cold enough, or humid enough for that matter.

Yeah the mycelial networks need time to revive and at least say four weeks and then some consistant rain and cold snaps to get them up.
Try your local pine forests, but also landscaped gardens with older pine mulch, or eucalypta mulch in your local area - eventually you will find them.
And the potency will blow you away.

Cannot agree more strongly on this. My life was changed for good after a couple of really intense trips on subaeruginosa, misjudging dosage *twice*. If you?re trying them for the first time I strongly suggest taking only 2 or 3 to test potency for starters.

On a sidenote here are a couple of pics from last year:
