coir with trich

hey guys this is a first post. been growing for a while now thanks for all the help! However, i looked for the answer to this question with no luck.
I recently did a grain to coir bulk monotub and had great success. when i returned to the store to buy more coir they had a new brand, and after reading the label (after purchase) i was shocked to discover that it has beneficial bacteria for plants called trichoderma in it.
i was wondering, since in my last grow i merely added hot water and addded my spawn, do i need to pressure cook the coir first in jars to sterilize it or should i just order a different brand offline?
i only have the one store that carries t in my area so its either work with this or order offline.
again thanks for all the help i never would have made it this far without all of your wonderful posts and archives!

...lol throw it out and get some real coir trich won't do at all. Trichoderma is a mold, a fungus eating fungus.

Throw that shit out! I have read that trich is good for plants by protecting the roots from competing, harmful fungus and bacteria.

Trich is not bacteria I believe if you pasteurize properly instead of using a bucket tek you can still use trich treated coir. Follow RR's method of pasteurization: www.mushroomvideos.com

Maybe but why start a bulk grow with trich-ridden coir? It seems like a fail waiting to happen

Well there is probably some trich on every brick of coir anyways. Pastuerization, when done properly, gives mushrooms a chance at any substrate.

Dude if you don't want to waste money, don't start with trich infested coir. DO you not have a pet store in the area?

If you decide to use the trich infested coir, let us know how it goes

It will be fine, this issue has been raised a few times.
I dont think it contains trichoderma mycelium. Only spores. Either way pasteurize it and your good to go!

If that's the only locally found coir then just pasteurize and give it a go!

it will go fine cause coir isn't infested with trich, it has trich spores like everything else, even you have mold spores on your skin clothes etc.
do you know what pasteurization does to mold spores ?
manure has more trich spores and we use it just fine .
you have good information on this forums, read first and post later

Alright, well i went ahead and tried pasteurization. Everything went smoothly. Since i use a clear tub and cover the substrate layer after its fully colonized I checked it after three days and my grain spots are definitely growing which is a good sign. Pretty sure its going to be successful. Used five quarts of spawn to one brick coir and two quarts verm btw.
Also i have located the plain eco earth coir at a pet shop about thirty miles away so i dont think this will be an issue. I honestly just wanted to go ahead and give the pasteurization a shot because i have been thinking about trying a dung and straw.

I've done this before and I can only recommend against it. I used over a dozen bricks of CocoGro brand coir after finding it dirt cheap at a local co-op, and had many, many trich infested monotubs.

Most of them took well over a month to colonize, and still left bare patches which turned out to be trich after introducing to fruiting conditions.
I did however get a few tubs that did quite well, and I was able to harvest 2 or 3 flushes before the trich took over.
It took me a long time to figure out what was wrong, and I finally switched to EcoEarth brand coir after reading CocoGro is "enriched" with trich, much as you have discovered about your coir, as it is intended as a soil-less plant medium. I have been doing great in monotubs and trays ever since I switched.
agent_p, you should really toss that tub. If the trich does indeed take it over it's probably going to get all over your house from you disposing off it and it will just piss you off later during your future projects.

This thread gets repeated at least weekly. All these questions have been answered many times before.
If you'll properly pasteurize the coir, it will work fine. That means hydrating it and then heating so the middle of the batch of coir is at 140F for 60 to 90 minutes. Try not to exceed 160F during that time. It will work great if you'll follow the above. RR

At first I used the boiling water bucket method for a few bricks, with 100% failure.
I also tried properly pasteurizing this stuff in quart jars on the stove, I maintained ~155-160 for an hour, and this is where I had a few successes however most ended up contaminated.
Maybe I wasn't doing something else properly during this time, but as soon as I switched to EcoEarth and scrubbed the room with the tubs down good I haven't had a trich contamination since.
I've also used the boiling water method with the EcoEarth with no contamination, but find the coir substrates colonize more "fully" and just seem healthier with proper pasteurization.
