Attack of the killer fungus - an entomopathogen 3

"In every loss there is a gain, as in every gain there is loss. Grasshopper, do you understand that?"
I found this yesterday and thought it was so cool that I had to share. It's probably a Beauveria sp, the anamorphic (asexual) form of a Cordyceps, attacking a grasshopper.
The fungus infects a living insect and slowly kills it before erupting from the cadaver to spread its spores.

I came across it while out mushroom hunting. It was just on the ground in the forest.

Heheh I really like that quote. Kung Fu ftw!
Awesome find, you should hijack the bugs on fungi thread with a fungi on bugs shot.

This is awesome!! sweet photos and great quote
-------------------- Having lived through an existence close to nature, one accepts the small and simple things as most important in life. Sun, wind, rain and snow. The sounds birds make, smells of fresh wild flowers. Love of all kinds, from friends and family, thy self and our neighbors. Beautiful sunrises to the darkest clouds dancing above in the sky. To forgive, learn, share and express. This is the only thing a man such as myself can ask for. What comes as the result is nothing short of the core of human existence, to truly live free in body and mind.

Also, I dunno if it's just me but I kept misreading the title as "an Empathogen" rather than "an Entomopathogen." Probably the

Oh awesome. I posted a link for a documentary about Cordyceps a while back, but it's kind of one of those things you don't actually expect to run into in real life. For those that are interested:

and scroll down.
(Gotta love whatever ad bot they've got on this thing--At the top of my screen "Shop for: Cordyceps on Amazon"...)

I've seen the Planet Earth series a few times now. That episode was awesome. Attenborough definitely does the best docos.

There are plenty of grasses and herbaceous plants in this forest, so there are all sorts of bugs around. But yeah, I don't see grasshoppers very often in the forests.
