Sound card issues

To keep it short, I dropped my Lenovo about 6 inches onto tile and now the sound is not right. I thought it might have been the speakers but when I plugged in my earphones the problem persisted. Is this the sound card? If it is can I replace it myself?/What should I look for in one when purchasing?

well............. with all the info you gave us, we should have that done for you in two seconds
but just for the people less intelligent as me, like suess or whatever why don't you give us the entire range of specs of your , it is a laptop right?
also it could be a driver, which would be strange considering this problem started when you dropped it, but before you go buying a new sound card there are some things you should check first. also, I had a sound card problem as well, and realized I have on board audio. on second though I'm guessing you don't have a laptop, because you mentioned speakers. your sound card, assuming you have one and not a chip set on board, will be installed in a pci slot of one sort or another. buying a new one would be fairly simple, but even simpler, would be if you had onboard audio already, which can be verified by the type of motherboard you have, but you need to post more specs. enabling it would be as simple as downloading a new driver and enabling it in the bios. an audio codec revision would be necessary as well.

Is this a laptop or desktop?
Can you describe the "not right" sound? Static? Feed back? Muffled? etc...
Since this started happening after a drop, I'm betting something came unseated.

that's possible also. could be broken or just unseated. often times having a sound card in a pci slot is just a waste of space, unless you do studio recording or have some major surround sound speakers connected, there is no point in having a sound card in your pci slot. check to see if your motherboard has onboard audio, if it does, you can probably just pull that sound card out, and enable the onboard audio in the bios. along with some driver and audio codec updates, you'll be good to go, and probably won't notice a difference.
same goes with network cards, a lot of people have 100mb/ps network cards in their pci slots, is this really worth having in a pci slot? 100mbps is standard speed, nothing special. then again don't go yanking anything out yet, make sure your i/o shield has all necessary ports/slot to make up for the missing panels you'll have if you remove hardware with a panel attached to the back of your computer. you need a sound jack for your audio, and you need an ethernet jack for your network. and I guess it doesn't hurt to have an upgrade, but most factory computers have cards installed in pci slots that have SLIGHT capabilities over the onboard chips. imho = not really worth it

laptop, I honestly don't know how to replace the sound card in a laptop. sorry. but if you say muffled, and not gone completely, that would mean that your sound card is working, and that it's a driver or audio codec issue, which is strange, considering you dropped the laptop. computers are weird like that though. have you checked all the drivers in device manager?

It doesn't have to mean that. The speaker itself could have been damaged by the impact.

Only way to know for sure is to use a multimeter on the traces, but you need the blueprints for the circuitry. I would guess it's probably on-board sound-card, in which case you would have to break out the soldering iron.
It's basically how the pro's refurbish PC's.
It could be something as simple of a loose/broken connector. Which would be easily soldered back into place. But it can be a bitch taking laptops apart.
Step one, search for your exact computer on the internet, and find out the motherboard.

hmmm.... I gotta learn how to do this.
to op, if you don't know how to solder, just take it somewhere to get it fixed, but this does sound nice. I guess we all kind of forgot to ask, do you have a warranty for this pc??

I know very little about computers but my device manager indicated my sound drivers are working properly. I guess it's just the speakers, but I don't know why that would affect my earphone jack. And yes I do have a warranty and apparently lenovo has pretty good customer service. I guess I'll call and see what's up, any pointers as to how I should phrase what happened?

Sounds like the jack got damaged/dislodged. It will most likely have to be resoldered or even replaced. Sucks man.
